No thanks. I'll stick to my sorority
I just wanted to share a recent experience that left me bothered. When I COB'd there were a few sororities that actively recruited me. I chose the one that I was the happiest and most comfortable in but there is still one organization that is trying to recruit me even though I made them aware that I joined an NPC sorority. This other sorority is a Latina Greek Organization.
Anyway, they have been really trying to recruit me for sometime now and told me that I could dissafiliate from Sigma Kappa to join them. I told them no (repeatedly) and now, I have been labeled a race traitor by them!!!
I was stunned and shocked that they would say these things about me simply b/c I did not want to join a strictly Latina organization. I joined my sorority b/c I was happy there and felt accepted not b/c of my race but b/c they truly felt like sisters.
Has anyone else experienced something like this? I am truly bothered by this and fear that this type of attitude could hurt us during future RUSH. Our sorority does not choose girls based on race. To be labeled like this could be devastating to us if these rumors keep going around.
Please Help.

Tell them to back off, seriously. We had two girls de pledge bc a Latin sorority on our campus was pressuring them so much to join them. They (the other sorority) told them all kinds of things that were NOT TRUE about us, it sucked. NOT NICE!

It happens alot...
The same situation happened to my pledge brother, and he like you said, "No". It is a shame that people don't get it. I don't think he was ever called a race traitor but he was treated poorly by this(Greek org. will go nameless for the sake of creating a problem on my old campus) other org. When it comes down to it... do what makes you happy. Stay strong and brush dem haters of.

one of my best friends/sisters is asian and would always get flyers, recruitment notices, etc from traditionally asian sororities. She recalled one time that she was IN LETTERS and the girls still tried to get her to join up. But she didn't experience any "you are not true to your culture" backlash though. She just simply tossed the flyers.

I'd report them to your campus Panhellenic or Greek advisor - this should not go on!

I just have to say
I have never heard of anything like this coming from an LGLO! I am very upset by this! For one thing, I know that many LGLOs (including mine) will not accept anyone who is a fully initiated member of any other GLO (with the exception of honor societies), so I'm not sure who is even allowed to do this according to national policy. Second, I think it is pathetic, and I'm sorry to hear that it has happened to people. I don't understand who would be that "hard up" for members that they would try and get someone who is already happy in another organization to join theirs. Even if they were able to somehow persuade someone to disaffiliate, would they really want to be someone's second choice?
ETA: Regarding the "traitor" issue-- I actually experienced this in "reverse" so-to-speak when I was an active. There were Latinas who had joined NPC organizations who would give us dirty looks in the library when we were studying, and they would start rumors about us. I never understood why because we didn't even know those women and had never even spoken to them. Either way, it is wrong, and no one should be criticizing another person's choice of organization, as it is a deeply personal choice.

LatinaAlum, I guess you just showed both sides of an issue. Saddening as it might be, but seems to be True!
Those that do that, seem to me just do nothing but belittle themselves and Thier Organizations!
As you said, if they are that hard up, then there is a problem, we as Greeks in TOTO have a hard enough time recruiting members for our Individual Groups from the ranks of Independents without treating fellow Greeks this way.

I would tell them that judging by their behavior, it is even more apparent that you made the right choice!

In spite of all that's going on, I'm glad you found the chapter that makes you feel most at home! Congratulations.

I've seen it happen between NPC sororities, too, when one chapter's rush crush decides to go somewhere else. Rejection is hard to take!

I'm an adviser for a CSULB NPC Sorority. I'd talk to Sam in the Greek Life Office. He is VERY approachable and will take care of this. He is very supportive of all greeks on our campus and will do the most appropriate thing he can to remedy this situation! Also, talk with your Chapter Adviser Cassie. She is fantastic and will follow up with Sam and I assure you this won't be a problem at least at Long Beach!

What I don't understand is why a sorority would beg for a member like that? It makes them look really sub-pathetic.

I'm actually in an Asian-interest sorority. There have been times when we've accidentally tried to recruit someone who was in an NPC sorority, but it was because we did not realize the person was already affiliated. But I think it is really crossing the line to tell someone that they should disaffiliate from the NPC sorority to join the sorority that is recruiting. My sorority always makes it a point to tell all PNM to check out other sororities if they're interested in any others. We tell them that it is a life-long commitment and you should check out the different options before making a decision, and that every sorority is different and there isn't one that is for everyone. I can't imagine pressuring someone to join who not only is not interested but is already affiliated. I wouldn't want someone in my sorority who didn't truly want to be there. And bad-mouthing NPC sororities reflects worse on the sorority that is spreading rumors than on the sororities being bad-mouthed.
