Angry Gunman Targets Delta Chi Fraternity House

As members of the Delta Chi fraternity were winding down the night early Thursday morning, an unknown gunman fired four to five rounds at the fraternity house.

At about 2:05 a.m., a vehicle drove past the house, located at 1803 10th Ave, and shot a parked car about five times. No one was injured in the shooting.

John Morgan, junior kinesiology major and Delta Chi member, said he was standing just 10 feet from where the bullets struck.

“I was standing outside talking on my cell phone when I heard pop, pop,” Morgan said. “I turned and saw a dark SUV, and I saw three more shots, and then it drove off. This could have been me dead or someone else dead.”

The vehicle drove away westbound on Cranford Place, police said.

The bullets impacted junior Delta Chi member Brad Hartman’s 1992 Ford Escort, which was parked in front of the house, piercing three of his tires. He said he’s more worried about why his car was shot than the actual damage.

“It makes me think, What could I have done to make somebody mad enough to shoot at a car?” Hartman said.

Sgt. Joe Tymkowych, Greeley police public information officer, said Thursday afternoon that there are few leads in the case.

“They have a couple of leads, but nothing solid yet,” he said. “We have a detective that’s assigned to the case, and it’s in investigations now.”

Tymkowych said police do not know how many people were involved in the drive-by.

Delta Chi President Josh Drexler said he doesn’t know why anyone would target the house or members of the fraternity.

“We have no idea why,” he said. “This goes way beyond anything anyone ever expected to happen. This is the last thing I ever expected to happen here. I’m just happy that no one got hurt.”

Junior marketing major and Delta Chi Vice President Joseph Dickinson echoed Drexler’s comments.

“We want this stuff to end,” Dickinson said. “This is serious, and it goes way beyond graffiti. We’re tired of it. We don’t look for fights. It just needs to end.”

UNC Police Chief Wendy Rich-Goldschmidt sent an e-mail to all students and faculty Thursday, asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Greeley Police Department.

***This stuff in Greeley is really getting out of hand. I'm glad no one was hurt but really, how could someone do this?!

A few years ago the Delts on my campus unloaded some clips at the KA house...which was about 30 ft from the Delt house. Needless to say they go kicked off for a few years.

Well, it happened Thursday, April 8, so I haven't heard of any new developments---everyone is away for Easter. But I'll post any updates I hear or read about.

The Delta Chi chapter has been targeted a few times this year that I know of with violence. Last fall some guys beat up some DChi's one night and ruined some DChi property and house property. I know they caught the guys b/c they went to the university, but they didn't say whatever happened to them. I hope they catch whoever did this. Makes me nervous to walk into my house parking lot now.

Nothing new to report - actually, the first I heard about it.

I know DChi had a brawl with the UNC baseball and rugby teams a few years ago....but this?

Wow!

Frightening!

Here's the update as of today and the link:

In the wake of a drive-by shooting Thursday morning outside the Delta Chi fraternity house, some members think they are a target for crime and vandalism.

Junior accounting and finance major Brad Hart- man’s car was hit in the shooting, and he missed the bullets by a couple seconds.

“A girl needed a ride home to the dorms, so I dropped her off and pulled back into my parking lot,” Hartman said.

He said just two seconds after walking into the house, he heard the shots.

“I thought someone was lighting firecrackers, and I had just gotten my car out of the shop that day,” Hartman said.

Hartman said although he didn’t see anyone following him, he thought it was suspicious that the shooting happened around the time he got back to the house.

Michael Weisberg, Delta Chi member and junior economics major, said he thinks it’s one incident in a larger series of incidents.

“We’ve been spray-painted, paint-balled and shot at,” he said. “It’s time to stop the hate.”

He said this is the reason he decided to put up a banner that hangs from the front of the house that reads, “Stop the Hate.”

Delta Chi member Steve Puterski said some people think simply being in a fraternity invites trouble.

“Some assume we cause problems because we’re in a fraternity,” he said.

But junior business major and Sigma Alpha Epsilon member Brian Leiker said he thinks Delta Chi is being targeted, since his fraternity hasn’t experienced any similar incidents.

“It was one person’s car, and it seems odd something that serious happened at a fraternity house,” he said. “It wasn’t like throwing eggs.”

For the 2003-04 school year, the national Delta Chi fraternity charged each member an average of $165 in risk-management fees, according to the Delta Chi Web site at www.deltachi.com.

“We are the third most insured by insurance companies,” Puterski said about fraternities.

He said that since the fraternity pays so much money to stay out of trouble, it doesn’t want to cause any.

“We get blamed, and people say we’re irresponsible,” he said. “If you have letters on your house, you’re a target.” “We’re just here to go to school and have fun,” Hartman added.

The problem with their perception is, like SAE is quoted, is that none of the other houses have had any problems similar to this.

I still think this either (1) goes back to the ongoing feud between DX and the baseball and rugby teams, or, more likely (2) other activities that the house has been rumored to have been involved with in the past...if you catch my drift.

I know the alumni have NOT been happy with their chapter here for a couple of years, so there is a lot more going on with this chapter than is being reported or discussed in formal channels. Time will tell.

Our campus is not so greek friendly anymore either. But you're right, they have been targeted while others haven't been, time will tell. But, I hope this stops. It's getting out of hand.
