Significance of white?
I was curious, what is the significance of wearing white dresses at Initiation & other important ceremonies?
Thanks!
Are there any sororities that don't wear white??

Other orgs may want to give a different answer, but I would say that it's part of our ritual.

I've always seen white as a colour representing both purity and newness. At a christening, a child wears white because he/she is being brought into the Christian world. Same when a child makes their first communion (to avoid competition in terms of who has the better dress, my school made us all wear white choir gowns over our clothes!). When a young woman makes her debut at a cotillion, she wears white because she's entering the world of adulthood, and is now a young woman, not a little girl. A bride is becoming a married woman, and is entering a different world as well. It makes sense for those going through initiation to wear white! Of course, there's always the case that sororities do it because of their ritual practices.

Hey everyone, tread carefully on this thread, you might get too close to ritual for comfort.

Agree.
When I was a new member we joked they made us wear white to prove that we really wanted to be Gamma Phis, since it was so hard to find it!

I asked this same question to our assistant pledge educator durring my pledging process. She told me that at the time we were founded white dresses were the nicest atire that a woman wore/owned. So in keeping with that and staying true to our founders, since all ritual ceramonies are important we should all wear our best clothes hence white dresses.

Exactly why my answer was what it was.
Attire is part of our ritual and not for public knowledge.

Why would anyone disclose parts of their ritual?

The fact that most organizations have their candidates wear white is not much of a secret; the details of what composes the specifics of the candidate's attire is.
In Alpha Sigma Phi's Black Lantern Processional (the only public ceremony in our rituals) the Marshal wears a white hooded robe and leads the processional, while the remaining members (in order of badge number seniority) in the procession wear black hooded robes. Other robes are used in our rituals, but I am not at liberty to discuss specifics of them in a public forum.

In Phi Kappa Psi, wearing white dresses at initiation is considered hazing.
