Biggest Greek system

Howdy, I am in a town in Southern Missouri called Springfield, and I was thinking about rushing. That was the reason I came here, but I wanted to ask y'all a question. What school has the larger greek system: Bama or Ole Miss? I keep hearing about how Ole Miss's greek system is second to none, but I've also heard that Bama's is a large system too.

I'm thinking about doing a study abroad to an SEC school for a semester or two, anyone wanna tell me where they think is the best (I can't go to Fla, Auburn, Vanderbilt, or Arkansas). I'm sure if I ever decide to go greek I would probably want to go to a specific chapter, but I was being non-greek with my question

I've always heard that Penn State had the largest Greek system.

You should choose your school based on the school, not their Greek system. While I can understand wanting to find your own spot, you have to find the best place for your own education first.

There are great groups everywhere!

How about Georgia? I went there and they have a large and really great greek system if you are interested. I think there are 22 sororities on campus and even more frats.

As far as number of NIC fraternities and NPC sororities Penn State has the most, as far as number of students involved I believe it's Indiana U. (Actually it's Illinois, thanks Valkyrie & BSU PhiSig.)

Now if you are talking about how many sisters are in a chapter, and influence on the school, I would say Bama & Ole Miss are pretty close based on what I've read here.

Something you should keep in mind though, is that many of the sororities at Southwest do not have chapters at Bama, and none of them have chapters at Ole Miss. Even if you do join a group at SMSU that has a chapter elsewhere, many sororities require you to take a semester to affiliate (i.e. you cannot be active in the chapter right away). So you would be looking at the Greek system as an "outsider" rather than on the "inside."

LOLZ! Sometimes the south seems like a foreign country to a northerner like myself, but I don't think you can consider it studying abroad.

I thought that Illinois has the most students in the Greek system.

I was just wondering. I'm from Missouri, so if I'm going to go to another school for a while, I want it to be something a little different. I don't know where to go though, I was just cruising the site and decided to ask a strange question.

Just wondering... If you're in MO, have you checked out Univ of MO-Columbia? Pretty damn big greek system and its not too far from ya.. Depends what you're looking for in a school.. Journalism is outstanding but if you're basing it on greek systems, Univ of MO has just over 25% greek 27ish fraternities and I think 16 sororities... I'll be going there Fall of 2004.. Can't wait..

Anyway good luck with your decision...

YES.

Studying abroad meant going to school for weeks or months in Japan, Denmark, New Zealand, England, France, or Spain.

Other than that it's just the National Student Exchange, which my old campus was a part of.

I know out west the largest Greek system (or one of the largest) is probably University of Washington

Well I don't know who has the biggest Greek System. Alabama's is probably larger. I think when people say Ole Miss has the best greek system they are talking about the strength of the greek system. The percentage of people who are greek at Ole Miss is something close to half where as most schools have about 15%-20%. Ole Miss is a rather small school (just under 10,000 undergrad) and there are only 9 sororities. But every sorority has well over 200 members with the largest chapters having well over 250 members. This year pledge classes were into the 90's (I know my sorority had 91). The campus is completely run by greeks too! This is probably why you've heard this. It certainly isn't the biggest greek system around...but then again Ole Miss isn't the biggest school around either. We *probably* have a higher percentage of students who are greek than other schools.
