Florida Keys evacuations begin; hurricane could eventually hit New England

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Gathering strength at a record pace, Hurricane Wilma grew into the most intense Atlantic storm ever recorded Wednesday — a Category 5 monster with 175 mph winds that is expected to make landfall somewhere on Florida’s west coast by late Saturday and then possibly make course for New England.

“People need to be prepared. Get ready for this,” said police Chief Bill Mauldin of Key West, a vulnerable city at the tip of the low-lying Florida Keys island chain.

The National Hurricane Center — which bases a storm’s strength on barometric pressure, not wind speed — said Wilma’s pressure had dropped to 882 millibars, the lowest minimum pressure ever measured in a hurricane in the Atlantic basin. Pressure drops as a hurricane gains strength, and the previous record was set by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 at 888 millibars.

I'm supposed to drive to FL starting on Saturday. I can't push my trip back too much because I need to watch my mom's dogs while she goes to SF (assuming the state isn't totally pummled). I'm really nervous because if she loses all phone access during the storm, we won't be able to communicate with her and see if we should continue down or stay in NC (we are considering moving there, so it wouldn't be horrible to look around). Right now Wilma is going literally over her house! I'm also afraid that we'll run out of gas and the gas stations won't have power, or that we'll have no power in the house for a week. I'm pregnant and really picky with food right now (as well as suddenly a psycho worrier), but I may be living on pbj!

I hear ya Tom. Never does entire citites or the state have to evacuate. Shoot half the time, I don't even go underground if its not in the city.

This sucker is really scary. Cat 2 to Cat 5 overnight. And incredibly unpredictable. Record breaking low pressure.

I just moved from Tampa to Dallas last week. The hurricanes were one of the reasons I asked to be transferred. I moved to Tampa last year 6 weeks before all of those hurricanes happened. Glad I'm going to miss this one, but I worry for my friends back in Florida.

I think hurricanes are almost the worst possible disaster to have to deal with. I'd put earthquakes ahead of them, because there is little to no warning with earthquakes and they are capable of just as much destruction. At least we see hurricanes coming these days. Can you imagine what it must have been like before they had radars and forecasting? They may hear stories from fishermen about bad storms out there, but then all of a sudden one of these monster storms would come and last for a full day, wreaking havoc?

After what Florida went through last year, I pledged that I wouldn't complain about the snow that winter. I am making that same pledge now. I'll take cold and snow over hurricanes. We get occasional tornados in Michigan, but they aren't frequent and they are rarely very destructive. Besides, most of us have basements so we have somewhere to take shelter.

I don't think I could live somewhere with hurricanes or earthquakes. I just don't think I could deal with it. Those who do are more brave than I.

Hopefully they will know more about Wilma's course over the next 24 hours. How strong she will still be and how long it takes her to get to Florida depends on how far west she gets before she's pulled back North and East by a low pressure system.

Jim Cantore sounded SO excited tonight. He was talking about how fast the pressure dropped, how incredibly small the eye of the hurricane is, etc. He is supercharged by this stuff.. and my son is just like him. He's following this hurricane season like a true weather geek.
