Fraternity histories, read 'em

If you get a chance, borrow one of your Greek pal's pledge manuals. You, in reading their history, will become aware that
virtually all of 'em have fantastic beginnings.
SAE's history, I read as a junior in high school and would have been a Sig Alph had I gone to Kansas State... the stories of the
early members..like Noble Leslie DeVotie, and of Miss Lucy, and
so on..great.
Chi Psi's "Pirate" story; The "Constantine Chapter"; the emptied
out chapters to enlist in the Civil War...these are glorious! All!
Zeta Psi's coat of arms have more sections than a Wal Mart, take
a look at it...even more than Tom's Lambda Chi one.
And Miss Emily Butterworth of Alpha Gamma Delta made sure the
TKE coat of arms was correct in design and heraldry.
And so on...Oh, yes, the enthralling Scruggs wrote "Our Cause Speeds On its Way"... Lots of good reading...and we will soon discover we do like each other...after all!

I always enjoy reading your posts. After reading a bunch of books on a bunch of different greeks, I will say that all the history (not just our own), is pretty neat.

I agree I purchased the 150 year history of DU in 1984 when I pledged and still have the copy in my bookshelf.

sorry to have screwed up Emily Butterfield's name. She was a
friend to many Greeks, not just TKE
Another interesting girl was Chi Omega's own Mary Love Collins,
who devoted almost her whole life to that wonderful group...and
John O Moseley, the SAE exec who owned over a hundred pair of
shoes, and Wilson Benton Heller, the Pike who rated all of us over
a long period of time; he was a WWI ace and press agent, too.
There were a lot of crusty old men and matrons who were loved
by us all. Take a moment, honor those mentors, and teach your
newbies the history that helps make the experience memorable.

yea- actually delta phi epsilon's founders day was on st. patricks day- and two of my best friends are deephers.... she was telling me that the five founders (known as the DIMES) were very proficient members of their communites as well- one of them (not sure which one that she was telling me- i think dorothy) helped to pass legislation so that immigrants can retain citizenship here... i don't know much about it- ask a d phi e girl

we had 35 founders... but i don' tknow any of their names... i wish i knew more history about them.. we just have this really cool picture taken of all of them on the site where our house was built a year later after nu sig's beginning 1928)
