Schools Announced for National Four Square Championship
After a year of qualifying tournaments across the country, The North-American Interfraternity Conference, in conjunction with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has announced the 14 campus champions being invited to the inaugural Grand Championship Tournament, to be held at the hospital in Memphis, TN, April 16-18, 2004
These 10 schools have the highest fundraising totals of the nearly 30 schools who hosted a qualifying tournament. In order to qualify for the Grand Championship, each team that participated in a qualifying tournament needed to raise a minimum of $1000. The largest tournament had over 20 teams. Totals for the fundraising will be announced at the Grand Championship Tournament. Four schools hosted double bracket
tournaments, therefore qualifying two teams.
The winning teams are from the following schools:
Beloit College
Butler University (two teams)
Eastern Illinois University
Eastern Michigan University (two teams)
Texas State University (two teams)
University of Connecticut
University of Oregon
Virginia Commonwealth University
Washington University (St. Louis) (two teams)
Youngstown State University
"The NIC remains committed to our relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital," said Jon Williamson, Executive Vice President of the NIC. "This first year is just the beginning of our fundraising for such an important medical community. The incredible work of the doctors, research, and staff at St. Jude deserves our support," he added.
The Grand Championship Tournament will be played on the
grounds of the hospital. St. Jude patients and their families will also be invited to join the play during the tournament. Tournament players will receive tours of the hospital, the medical research facilities, and Target House during their stay in Memphis.
Although the campus tournaments are open to any student or
student group, all the champions are affiliated with a fraternity or sorority. "We are excited that so many fraternity and sorority leaders were part of this exciting new program. Their enthusiasm, involvement, and leadership have made a difference," Williamson said.
In addition, the tournaments at Washington University and the University of Connecticut were hosted and organized by chapters of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the Virginia Commonwealth university tournament was coordinated by the Delta Chi chapter. The NIC expresses its sincere thanks to the men of these chapters and all the tournament directors for their hard work and visionary leadership for making these tournaments work in the first year.
