Pierced Tongue
Could everyone who has a pierced tongue please post here? I know we already have a general piercing thread but I am specifically curious about tongues.
Also, how long have you had your piercing?
Did it hurt?
Are you glad you did it?
Don't worry, this soon-to-be 37 year-old mom isn't getting her tongue pierced! Just doing recon for a young friend of mine

This gal has had hers pierced for 6 years already.
The actual piercing itself wasn't so bad as the recovery period. They get clamps, grab on to your tongue, and then PIERCE! My mouth turned into the Board of Water Supply with all that drool.
I couldn't eat hot foods and noodles because my tongue was sensitive for about a week and I was afraid that any noodles would get tangled onto the barbell.
I have no regrets, and three chipped teeth later...I have no plans on taking it off for a while.

I haven't had my tongue pierced, although I have had other places done.
http://www.bmezine.com is a great resource for all body modification information. Practically any question you could have about a tongue piercing has been answered, and they have great information on what you should look for in terms of a piercing studio and piercer.

i've been contemplating getting it done myself, but my mind changed when a close friend of mine got it done. i have this thing with yucky stuff in my mouth...and after seeing his tounge turn white and watching him scrape it off i threw up and knew i'd never be able to handle that myself.
also- i have an oral fixation (as in i constantly have gum/candy/etc. in my mouth) and i've observed other people with the same thing and they constantly play with it...and it's highly unattractive. i know if i had it there i couldn't resist playing with it!

I also have not had my tongue pierced, but my husband has. It swelled for the first couple of days and he ate softer food for the first 24 hours. It healed up well and never had any problems. He left it in for about 2 years.
I would also like to second lindsay_iu, www.bmezine.com has great information on any body mods you (or your friend) might be interested in. They proved very helpful when I was making piercing decisions.

I had one for about five years. It was perfectly healthy, but for some reason it got infected after I moved to a different town. I got rid of it and never put it back in after the infection healed. I also broke one of my molars (OUCH) when I bit down on the stud when I thought I was biting down on a popcorn kernel.
Mine didn't hurt because I had the best piercer in the world. All of my pierced friends recommended this guy because he didn't use forceps and because he had an almost hypnotic manner, so much so that you didn't really know he'd pierced you until you saw the needle sticking out of your body part. I'd go to him again - as a matter of fact, maybe I will now that I'm back in my hometown for the holidays!
Aftercare is important. Stay away from toothpastes with peroxide in them. Don't be afraid to move your tongue around after the piercing - it'll just make it hurt that much worse when you do move it. Drink lots (and I do mean LOTS) of cold water in the first 48-72 hours, rinse with a solution of sea salt and water during that period (not table salt), take zinc and vitamin C every day, don't smoke, and the swelling will be completely gone. A properly pierced tongue should be completely healed in about 2-3 weeks.

I've had mine for 4 years now...
It didnt hurt, but my tongue swelled up pretty bad...
I'm glad I did something most people don't have the balls to do but other than that, when I'm bored, you can see I'm pretty amused by it

I had my belly pierced (different thing I know) and I thought it was the sexiest thing ever. Then after changing the piercing myself and getting a barbell that wasn't long enough, I realized I was infecting myself and irritating the opening. I got a new one, recommended and purchased at a professional establishment. It ended up ripping my hole wider and getting so infected that it was pussy and bleeding. I finally took it out, after a 1 1/2 of having it, and about 6 months of uncomfortable pain. I now have a scar. It's not very sexy anymore...and I think the same could apply to tongue piericings. My mother, who is an orthodontist assistant, has seen some of her patients and the reporcussions of tongue piercings. The stories alone are enough to convince me that it's not the thing for me.

I've had mine for about 5 years now, and I have never had any problems with it. I do recomend ibuprofin, cold water and sucking on ice for about the first 2 days, but it's just the swelling. As long as you do that (I did) there probably won't be any problems. Just make sure that the place where your friend gets pierced is sanitray and hygenic. You can usually ask the piercer about the process, and what they do to make everything sanitary. If you think the place is questionable at all, it's not the right place to be.

I had my tongue pierced twice.
Once in high school, and it fell out as I was drinking out of a straw and driving over railroad tracks.
Got it pierced again in college. Both times, it didn't hurt AT ALL (although I've heard i'm in the minority). I think getting blood taken hurts way more. Anyway, mine didn't swell at all either time. I was able to talk perfectly clear the next day, and I was eating solid food in 2 days.
Here's the thing:
I took excellent care of it. It healed. 4 weeks later, it felt like I had rocks in my tongue. The piercer took one look at it and made me take it out. Apparently they were calcium deposits- there's no way to avoid getting it, it just depends how much calcium is in your saliva. That is the only reason I haven't had it redone.
So tell your friend there's no way to know if that will happen, you just have to cross your fingers and go for it. But the first and most of the second time, it was a great experience.
Leave it to me to have the freak post.

I had mine pierced for about almost 24 hours. My mom screamed at me to take it out. They find things like that dirty. Whatever.
It didn't hurt at all! The only time I freaked out is when I saw blood cuz the clamp wasn't on tight enough and the needle fell through but it didn't bleed much and didn't hurt. LOVED IT! Wish I still had it .

I love it.
No it did not hurt. It is actually the least painful pieircing. It swells up and that's when it hurts. Mine was only really swollen for 2 days and I ate ice cream. But they say it can stay swollen for up to 2 weeks.
No AXJules, I don't think you're in the minority. Anyone who says it hurt to get it pierced is a big baby
It hurts when it swells up.
My dentist trys to get me to take mine out. She tells me horror stories too. I don't listen to her. Mine is fine. I've had it for 3 years.

Its out now. I took it for professional reasons. I got more than enough use out of it, if you know what I mean.
