Did anyone see...
...Babyboy.
I saw it last week. I really wasn't interested in seeing it but I was suckered into it. Since I had low expectations, the movie turned out to be better than I thought. But, there are some concerns that I have with the movie. Like...
What was up with all of the daydreams?
Why was everyone's mother so young?
Okay, Tyrese's(sp) friend was baptized but what about the fact that he committed murder?
Tyrese got a key to his girlfriends house but did he get a job, did he mature, does he take care of his other child?
I think the overall idea of the movie was good but John Singleton left a lot of stuff hanging. I felt kind of cheated.
I just wanted to know if I was the only one who felt like this.

I disliked the movie bc I also felt a lot was missing. I thought the movie was how he progressed into a man. All I saw was a bunch of people having sex!

I finally saw this for the first time tonight. A certain soror who lives in Charlotte CLOWNED ME last month for never seeing the movie.
1. TYRESE IS OOOOOOOOOOOOOOGLY!!! His head is really like squeezed in at the top. He is a vaginal birth gone terribly wrong.
2. Yvette PUT UP WITH TOOOOOOO MUCH CHIT from Jody!! Too much!! There is no way I would have multiple abortions, a baby born AFTER MINE, knowledge of him cheating MULTIPLE TIMES, him driving my car and GHETTOFYING IT, etc. I kept getting pissed every time I saw that dayum car. SASAS!!!
3. Those dreams -- wow
4. The opening montage and thoughts -- deep
5. MELVIN -- WOW!! That naked breakfast scene and the sex scene -- RAW!!
Why was the mama so freaking young looking and actin'. I was not feeling that.
The conclusion was rushed. I would not have been able to marry him. The conclusion left too many holes.
It was a good movie don't get me wrong but EHH!!!

Oh no, I can't believe you think my finace' is ugly . Well, I must admit I was upset with the movie myself. As fine as my baby is, he hadn't quite master the acting in this movie.
John Singleton came to a school in the same city where I attend school, and me and my friends went to hear him speak. When it got to the question and answer session many women asked why he always portrays women as weak and simple, needing a man to dictate their self-worth. They asked why he made it so that Yvette put up with everything like that. His response was that he wasn't trying to put black women in a negative light, but he does know women who are like that. Well, needless to say that did not fly over too well, with us in the room, but he really couldn't say much else. He also said that the reason he casted such a young woman to play his mother was because in "the hood" the mothers are young, but even the older ones still look young. Now I didn't grow up in "the hood", but my hometown is extremely ghetto and not all of the mothers are 5 years older than their offspring. He offended more with that comment. With that being said, I thought the movie was okay, but since that forum with John Singleton I really haven't been feeling him.

I am sure AJ Johnson would be on top of the world if she saw this post. She looks great and very young, but she is in her 30's (mid to late). I think Jody was supposed to be younger than 21 and she was supposed to be around 35.

I know that AJ is in her late 30s -- 38 or 39 and a very toned body, but she looks like she is in her 20s but we must remember Black don't crack.
Oh and Jody was 20 in the movie.

Y'all are going to tear my black card in two I think.
Not only have i never seen this movie, I don't plan to. Put me on the TYRESE LOOKS LIKE AN ALIEN train. He fools you into thinking he will be goodlooking through skin tone and musculature and haveing a white smile. THen you look at the boy and notice that he looks more like a hyena mated with one of the Coneheads. Ugh.

Hey all:
I have to agree that for some reason, Tyrese is NOT attractive to me.
About the "young, ghetto mama" thing, I must say to remember that all ghetto mamas are not created equal. By that I mean that the stereotypes that I think JS was speaking on tend to be geographically dictated. I mean Los Angeles ghetto may not be the same as South Carolina ghetto (just using that as an example) and vice versa. His stereotype is that of Los Angeles/Watts/Compton. That movie, as well as Boys in the Hood, Tales from the Hood, Friday (parts 1,2,3..), Menace to Society,etc... are based on that lifestyle only. Since he is from LA and went to school in LA, I would venture to say that that's all he knows and that he has seen many a mama who is really merely 15 years older than her son/daughter. Additionally, he has seen may a woman who acts and subjects herself to the lifestyle the say Yvette did. It only portrays ONE aspect of life "in the hood" there are many more Ronnies (Jada in Menace) as there are Yvette's. Quietly, Yvette's character was NOT that bad. She was working, took care of her child, by herself. All he was good for was some d!ck, basically.
Okay, I am sorry. I tend to be sympathetic to the lifestyle because that is home for me, and honestly, not too far from my own life to be honest. The only theng separating me from her is that I am pursuing a PhD, but when I go "home" it's to Compton I go, where this is ALL I see. My boyfriend, who's from Memphis, went to Morehouse said when he saw the movie it was PURE Los Angeles, accents and all. I had no idea what he was saying but when I saw it, I knew. It is very "something."
Considering Jody had an older brother, I can't even imagine how old she was "supposed" to be when she had him. Dayum!
Sorry so long. But I am STILL in South Africa, where my rental car got stolen a few days ago and honestly, I am ready to GO... AFTER I buy a few mor items
Photos coming soon.
