My favorite Spanish language film is a kinda old one -- "Like Water for Chocolate". I loved that one.

I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE films from New Zealand, specifically about the Maori culture:

Whale Rider
Once Were Warriors and its sequel What Becomes of the Broken Hearted
The Maori Merchant of Venice (the Maori version of the Shakespeare play)

I remember going to my Indigenous Politics class one day and I almost fainted when I saw Rena Owen and Temuera Morrison (the lead actor and actress from Once Were Warriors) sitting in front. They came to lecture on the Maori in film that day.

I recommend renting "Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown". It is my favorite Spanish language film and it is hilarious.

I think you mean Roberto Begnini for Life is Beautiful.

My favorite of late is Amelie. Great cinematography.

Another vote for "Like Water for Chocolate."

There is a Japanese film called "Tampopo" that is absolutly the funniest movie I have ever seen. It's a Japanese take on a Western movie, and it's all about this truck driver trying to help this lady make the perfect bowl of ramen. Then there are these little side-stories all about food and love. I guess the concept is about food feeding the mind, body, and soul.

It's hilarious. I highly recommend it to anyone with a slightly off sense of humor.

I recently saw L'auberge espagnole, which I absolutely adored...
Malena was also really good... I'm a big foreign film fan.
