UGa Greek gets 30 days in accidental death

(I think these guys were ATOs???)

Student sentenced in connection with frat brother's death

The Associated Press - ATHENS, Ga.

A University of Georgia student found guilty of misdemeanor charges in the death last year of a fraternity brother has been sentenced to 30 days in jail, but will be allowed to remain free pending an appeal.

Brett Allen Steele, 20, was found guilty by a Clarke County jury earlier this year of second-degree homicide by vehicle and failure to report an accident. Friday's sentence was stayed pending an appeal.

Travis F. Starr, 19, fell from Steele's pickup April 17 as Steele was driving home a group of students at about 2:15 a.m. after a night of drinking.

After the fall, Starr was taken home to his apartment where he slept until being taken to St. Mary's Hospital some 20 hours later. He lapsed into a coma and died April 25 at University Hospital in Augusta.

Superior Court Judge David Sweat said Steele can serve his 30-day sentence on weekends, as long as Steele is confined for 48 hours at a time.
