Derby Days Ideas

Derby Days at Vanderbilt is in two weeks...and I, for one, am overly excited. I was just wondering if any of you had any cute ideas, like slogans for banners and t-shirts or anything that helped you in the past. How have you all organized teams to find the derby? Are there any Derby Darlings or brothers who have any suggestions for whoever my house's Derby Darling will be?
Thanks!

Re: Derby Days Ideas

Try taking themes of skits from movies. Find the girls in your chapter who know the brothers best and would know their inside jokes. Last year, we played up "cool and tough" because that was a big thing that the brothers always say.

What activities do you participate in?

I think our derby days is a little different.
We start off the week with the Derby Chase, and then there is derby olympics, then derby sing (a lip sync).

I think my favorite theme that we did was a "candy" theme. We had a banner in the back of our lip sync that said "sweet sigma chi." Our poster and everything had to do with candy. unfortunately another group had the same theme. oh well it happens.

I have also seen:
School Days
Working Girls (doctors, firepeople, army/military, office)
Sports/Boxing theme
A "Sleepy" theme
A kids theme
Fire theme
Good/bad theme (it's been way over done at our school though)
hawaiian theme
And our theme last year was "austin powers"

None of the sororities here really does a theme-everyone just makes a suggestive slogan from "derby", like "Talk derby to me" and "Let's get derby", which is pretty much what the fraternities do with regards to Anchor Splash and playing off the word "wet"-I don't think I need to elaborate.

Here are our events-if any of you can see a way to incorporate a theme, tell me:
Sunday - Derby Dash - Sunday 1:15 register at the house, I will have forms on
Monday at chapter. It is $5 dollars.

Monday - Community service hours start

Tuesday - Find the Derby starts. We are given a clue to find a blue derby
which then gives us another clue to find the other derby (I forget the
color). This ends on Friday.

There might be Greek Night at the baseball park on Tuesday, but Sigma Chi hasn't
finalized that yet.

Wednesday - Field events start at 4. This is the most fun event with tug of
war (no cleats as agreed upon by all sororities), milk chug (our coaches chug
not us), and dress your coaches. Afterwards there is a BBQ.

Thursday - Brother Auction, place and time to be determined.

Friday - Glow Party - super fun party to celebrate a fabulous week
Flag Football starts

Last year there were some parties at night during the week, too, but I'm not sure if there will be any of those yet. It seems like every chapter has different events.

Play off "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi". A classic that can not only win you points but hearts as well.

"ADPi - The girl of your dreams."

or

"ADPi - The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi."

in my day,

the sigma chi's had each sorority submit a theme suggestion based on the sigma chi's overall theme--such as fairy tales as the general theme and then the sororities would submit things like sleeping beauty, goldilocks and the 3 bears, cinderella, etc. they were all put into a hat and each sorority representative chose with her eyes closed. whatever your representative chose was what you based everything to do with derby days on. the year we won the general theme was tv shows and we got "sesame street", which we turned into sigma chi street. our derby daddy appeared in our skit decked out like kermit the frog and he sung the song,"it's not easy being Greek", based on the kermit song<"it's not easy being green. each sorority dressed up their sweetheart and about a dozen or so of us worked on an oscar the grouch costume for him, complete with trash can. except that the costume was orange, not green, it was the spittin'image. each group also did yard decorations and our front yard looked like sesame street complete with all the most popular characters-local parents of little kids would bring their kids by and take photos of their kids posing with the figures and we even made the local news! i can't imagine doing derby days without a theme-it just makes everything so much easier. good luck to you.
