Help
I am very interested in becoming an AKA I am a freshman at a Historically black college and I am worried about choosing the right organization to join. No one in my family has pledged so what should I be looking at when I am ready to finalize my decision to pledge AKA? What are current AKA's looking for when they see new people? What's up with the lightskinned long hair AKA trend? Eventhough I fit the sterotype, why is it one?

As we always said in my undergrad chapter, "don't believe the hype about the stereotype". I urge you to attend as many events sponsored by the AKA chapter on your campus as you can. That is how I got to know many of the AKAs in my chapter before pledging. When I looked at potential candidates in college, appearance was not the only thing I was concerned about. I, too, fit the "stereotype" of an AKA but that does not get you selected. You can be the most beautiful female on campus, but if you are not beautiful on the inside or you are lazy, then you are not worthy to be a part. I want to know that you exemplify the qualities of what an AKA should be. Are you committed and dependable? How do you carry yourself? Do you believe in community service and are willing to give of your time and talents to help others? Those are just some of the questions that you can ask yourself. I knew before I arrived on campus that I wanted to be an AKA. As I noted in another post, my mom's best friend is an AKA, I was an AKA debutante in high school, and the grad. chapter in my hometown was always active in the community and still is. I observed the way the sorors on my campus interacted with one another and other people. I took note of their community service projects. The decision to pledge has to be yours alone. It is not something that should be done because your friends want to do it, your family wants you to do it, you want to wear greek letters, you want to step, or party. People have pledged various organizations for some of those reasons and they are dissappointed every time. There have been people who wished they had pledged a different organziation, but it is too late. As a freshman, you have some time to do some research. If you have already checked out the official sorority website, then go to the individual chapter websites. And, of course, please keep your grades up. Each chapter can set their own GPA requirements above the national requirement. If your grades fall, you will be ineligible even after pledging. Academic acheivement is very important. Afterall, you are in school to receive an education.

When looking for a soroity, you have to make sure that the purpose of the sorority is similar to your values. Alpha Kappa Alpha is a serious matter and we only want the best women to represent us.Get as much informationas you can on the sorority of your choice and go from there. As far as the stereotype goes, its just a stereotype.

Y what college are you attending? i am far
from lightskinned. But i am 110% AKA. AKA
is a belief and attitude. i knew i wanted to be an AKA. But you have to figure out why you want to be greek first then what organization represents who you are and want to be. i admired AKA and what they stood for as women. There are certain characteristics that each group upholds and puts out there good or bad so it's up to you to see thru the smoke.

I am also at an HBCU and I am interested in becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. It is my first year here (although it is my second in college). This year I did not attend any of the events because I did not know a lot about greek life, but also because I wanted to take the time to do my research and to really make sure that this is what I wanted and to try and become the type of person that someone would choose to become a member. As of right now my GPA is 3.76, I am involved in community service, and a number of other organization, etc. I just want to know if the fact that I didn't attend any events this year, effect my chances of being selected next year (spring), even if I attend all events from here until that time?

Another question
As I'm getting more in depth with my pursuit of membership, I am finding out that I have access to a good number of women who are members. The women are mostly older and are friends of parents or family members, and I have one professor who is a member. I have been told that it would be okay to be put in contact with these members, or approach them. I am curious about how I should approach them.

Y'all betta reck on eyes...
MysticNoir, consider yourself officially clowned. I'm not really in the mood for this today. I have had a BAD day. Your PM came at the WRONG time.
Here is the PM that I received from MysticNoir after closing this thread:

Hello,
I apologize if I crossed any lines with either one of my questions, because I am genuinely curious, and have had questions like that answered before by members. I re-read Pearls of Wisdom to refresh my memory, thank you for instructing me to do so, so that in the future I don't make the same mistake.
MysticNoir
Now, here is my question to you: If you have had "questions like that" answered before by members, where are these members NOW and why haven't you asked them? Find them and ask them, but DO NOT ask us about membership on this site again. We can't help you. www.aka1908.com or bust.
Thank you,
The Awesome Foursome
