Finer Womanhood Observance
Purpose: To emphasize the ideals, standards, values, customs and attributes of Finer Women.
One of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority's four principles, the organization has publicly commemorated
Finer Womanhood since Zeta member Eugenia Chiles submitted plans for a national celebration at the 1923 Atlanta convention. This celebration has continued to be a major focus for Zeta. Formally defined as “the distinguishing characteristics of a woman—one superior in kind, quality or appearance, marked by or affecting elegance or refinement,” Finer Womanhood celebrates the very best of womankind. Zeta members hold with great reverence the concept and practice of Finer Womanhood. The Finer Womanhood Observance is a time when Zetas around the globe bring before the local community community programs that emphasize the national theme. Traditionally many chapters honor outstanding community members, attend worship services and host youth cotillions and musical programs as a part of the celebratory activities.
Finer Womanhood begins the last full week of February and extends through the month of March to draw attention to the Sorority's most unique ideal. This year,
Finer Womanhood Month is from
February 22-March 31, 2004 .
“No Greek-letter organization has a greater movement than ours—Finer Womanhood.”
Venetia E. Nichols, National Financial Secretary, February 1928.
