Cool i was wondering

Everyone keeps saying that grades are so important for pledging. I know to be considered for AKA, a person must maintain a 2.5 gpa. Well I have over that, but it is not real high. I mean, i do not have a 3.5 or anything. To be honest, i only have a 2.8, but i have community service, and i am very active on campus. I am in many organizationa. I want to try and become a member, but with the emphasis on grades, i am scared my gpa is not high enough. Does anyone have advice for me?

Cool

Hello Muffe,
I thought the same thing you did, but I found that Alpha Kappa Alpha places a strong emphasis on character as well.Although academics is very important you must demonstrate leadership skills and be able to contribute to the organization. Don't let your grades discourage you from trying. If you truly want to be an AKA you will never give up.

I had the same gpa and I made it. I totally agree with RenaAKA, the #1 requirment to get into AKA and my chapter is high ethical & moral standards. Someone may have a 4.0 but if they do not carry themselves in a respectable manner and do not contribute anything to the organization/chapter what good is it?

And keep in mind your major. If you have a difficult major that requires a lot of math, science or accounting having a 2.8 is pretty good.

When I attended my first chapter meeting a while back I realize that there is A LOT of work in running an effective chapter especially a small one. Grades are very important but if you cannot take on a leadership role and chair your commitee or hold an office...you are not an asset to the chapter.

Good luck in your quest!

Ooh... Pink and Green are so pretty to me.

Songstress21 made a good point. Not every AKA chapter requires the same gpa. Each chapter has the option of setting the required gpa higher than 2.5 depending upon the standards at the respective college. It is a good idea to have higher than the minimum gpa, but if you don't just make sure that you work hard to keep your grades up. Afterall, education is the reason for college.

However Songstress I did and I work hard both day and night for Alpha Kappa Alpha I am an economics major with a concentration in finance so to me a 2.8 is extremely good and I am proud of it!

A 2.8 is nothing to be proud of. It's not horrible but still, nothing to be proud of. What is the average gpa of your chapter?

A 2.8 is something to be proud of if a person sincerely worked hard for it. I commend you and wish you luck Anydaynow, because Econ/Finance classes aren't easy...I know first hand. I majored in Business undergrad. Let's be supportive of one another shall we?

Muffe,

Precious your are in college. You are in a place that many can only dream of being. If you 2.8 GPA is a result of hard work and dedication, I applaud your effort. However, if it is due to partying and procrastination, shame on you!

Keep up the good work. Work hard to make this world a better place for others. Remember, GOD IS the be all end all.

I want to emphasize Soror Akatude's point. "EDUCATION IS THE REASON FOR COLLEGE."

This should come first before anything. I participate in recruiting efforts for my company and we have a minimum GPA requirement. Resumes with GPAs lower than the minimum are not given a second glance. Keep those grades up!

P.S. If any sorors or sisterfriends are Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineers and are looking for a first job or a change from their current job, send me an email and I will give you more info on my company and location. Please be specific in your message and include some info about yourself. I will not respond to messages that seem suspicious.

At my school the minimum gpa for membership is a 2.8. Some of you might not have made the cut. Grades are not everything but make sure you work hard in your classes and don't settle for just having the minimum.

Question

I too have a 2.8 GPA know. I recently attended an interest meeting and heard many Freshmen soon to be Sophmores brag about their 3.7s and 4.0 but I had to nudge myself and say. Yes, this is very good for them and I hope they keep it up. But I have worked extremely hard for my GPA. I am married, with a small child, holding down a full-time job at one time I had two jobs while in college and taking a full class load. All while being a very active member on campus holding leadership roles and participating on campus and in the community. I have already encouraged myself that though I am only slightly above that 2.5 I have other qualities that they will look at. What do you Ladies think about seasoned college students being compared/or selected with "NEW" college students.

Talking

Thank you AKAtude, I did work hard for my 2.8. Through all my trials, I have stayed in prayer (most of the time) and I now pray that as the time draws near for my schools chapter to accept applications that God blesses me to be pinned. I will love my younger sisters and show them respect. Together we will carry on the best traditions that were set before us.
