To my Pi Phi (as in Pi Beta Phi) sisters:
Has anyone heard about/seen this? I realize that Pi Phi is only our nickname, but something about this local using it as there chapter name bothers me!

Their name wouldn't bother me all that much, if I thought they were taking their organization seriously But it doesn't look that way. I went to check out what their purpose was an all that was on that page was another link that said Geezer Pleezer. It looks like a joke group too me.

I thought so too at first... but this is the despcription given on the Temple University Ambler campus under student activites and organizations.
Pi Phi Sorority
A local social/service sorority, the organization helps with various fundraisers for charitable groups throughout the area.

Seeing another post tonight about secret societies at colleges where greek systems werent recognized reminded me of this post..
was there ever a chapter at temple that closed.. im not sure.. i guess i could go find my notebook upstairs but i think its in my trunk..
also does anyone know if we have the "pi phi" trademarked.. i wouldnt think we would since its just our nickname.. but I wondered if this org wore the letters pi phi on campus.. Its just that many sisters have just pi and phi on shirts here thats why i was wondering.. if i saw someone that i didnt know even with just those two letters on i would think they were a member.. thats just why i was wondering
i guess someone at temple might know since they prob have seen them around..

Idk, but I wish that nationals would look into it. We've never had a chapter at Temple.

Since we are "Pi BETA Phi" and not "Pi Phi", any trademark would be for the full name of the organization. I doubt there is anything we can do about groups who use part of our name any more than other NPC groups could do about locals who use part of their name (and from what I can tell, that isn't all that uncommon... how many times are locals that we colonize as chapters using Pi and Phi?). From the website, one cannot tell if the group is even still in existence. There is a list of founders from 2000 and a list of Actives dated 2002. I counted 8. The page has not been updated in 2 years so who knows if they're even still a viable organization.
And no, we've never had a chapter at Temple.

I believe that the Greek letters "PBF" are copyrighted. Could be wrong, though.

Yeah, I realized that there probably wasnt much that could be done.
I guess since there isnt a Pi Beta Phi chapter there it wasnt a big deal for them to use that name, but I know that if a group of girls started going around our campus calling themselves the Pi Phi sorority I think that it would upset a lot of people.
Also I looked on the temple website and it seems like they are pretty active. I guess they just havent updated their website.
I just think since our nickname is so widely know as Pi Phi even on my campus sometimes when people would ask which sorority i was in people would look at me odd when i said our whole name.. then when i said pi phi then they knew.. not sure why that is.. maybe we refer to ourselves to much just as that.. does any one else have this at their campus.. ??
