Question Yoga

okay - so i've finally decided that i really want to do something good for myself, and i'm not the kinda girl who likes to sweat, so i'm thinking yoga -- anyone know of a good way to start - is this even a good idea (i'm overall decent - just a small belly that needs to go away, i have good muscle tone in arms and legs)

any ideas - i'm open here

Is Pilates like yoga? I am thinking about buying the ballet workout in addition to pilates video.

About 2 summers ago my best friend and I joined a gym and the only night class they had was for Yoga. We had always heard great things about it and how it soothes your soul. Anyway, we walk in and including both of us and the instructor there were a total of like 6 people there. Anyway, it did not calm or soothe us in any way because we were having a hard time getting in position and just doing the moves. We were very discouraged and never went again, but we should have stuck with it, given it some time to adjust and learn the moves.

What kind of results do you get from Yoga? I am sure you get wonderful results with time, but when i was doing the actual moves, it didnt seem worth it to me.

Yeah Pilates is a lot like yoga. It combines things from yoga and dance. Its like high speed yoga with some ballet stuff thrown in. I think it works great. I always work up a sweat.

If you don't like exercising in front of people then videos are the way to go. But yoga is probably a bad video choice- just because form is SO important, as is breathing. THe gentle guidance of a good teacher can make all the difference when you are just beginning between a great and mentally stimulating experience and a painful injury.

My gym just started something called Tribal Yoga. It is amaaaazing! A mix of African dance and yoga basics. So great.

And if you don't like to sweat you might not like yoga- I always sweat at a yoga class and I am not a big sweater.

On a minor note, why don't you like group exercise? Just wondering. If you like you can PM me the answer.

A word of caution about Tae Bo. It is exercise. Only exercise. Its ture that some of it was taken from martial arts but please it is exercise not a self defence method so don't try it as a system of fighting if you are attacked.

Yoga hurts! Not in a bad way - everything looks so deceptively easy, and then your body won't get even close to the instructor's pose, and by the end of 30 seconds your muscles are shaking from holding the position. Yoga makes me hurt more than ballet class or step or any other class I take. But it does make you stronger and more flexible.

too many witnesses

okay here's the deal - i'm sort of a klutz, and i like to practice things by myself for a while before i let people watch me fall down on my behind! no really - i'm super paranoid (okay, not quite super) and it bugs me when i think people are watching me, hence, no group excercising.

I am sooooo bad at yoga, but I love it. I'm one of those girls that cannot balance real well(you know, walk and chew gum)...but I still can do it!

Pilates, I have always wanted to try, but I cannot find them here...we have a yoga studio that has class at 12 everyday! It's good lunch time fun!

SUGGESTIONS: Do not wear loose clothes...you have to have snugg fighting underneath. You legs and such will be in the air and it is tough to concentrate with your neighbor having a good view straight up your shorts!

Good Luck!

That I can understand, because when you do a group exercise class, generally people are watching you, lol. I think for me I don't mind having them see me mess up because most of them mess up too. And it can be fun sometimes to share the experience, especially when you all get something right that had escaped you.

What is pilates? I'm thinking it's similar to yoga but holding the positions longer. Am I wrong?

Pilates was developed by a nurse during WWI to rehab bedridden soldiers.

While yoga concentrates mostly on holding a pose
Pilates is more motion oriented.

But there are lots of similarities in the two.

But you may read for yourself

I decided that my workout routine needed a big change. So, I have begun to practice yoga. I've done Pilates, Tae-bo, the Firm, and all kinds of cardio, yet I have reached a point where I am really bored with those programs. I went to my first yoga class yesterday afternoon and I was amazed how relaxed I felt for the rest of the evening. I am going back today once I get off work.

Does anyone practice yoga frequently? If so, what have you noticed differently about your body? I'm hoping to retain my flexability and stamina with yoga. Perhaps even tone those tough-to-reach places.

I am also a huge klutz! ( i trip over my own two feet daily!) but I have become a huge yoga nut! It helps with the klutziness and it also gives a great work out. also, if you have had any serious injuries or surgeries, it helps to heal them and stretch them out and it makes your joints stronger.
i highly recomend going to a class a few times and then get a video just so you know you are doing the postures correctly.
plus, it takes a few a times to take it seriously.
