GLO Nicknames

A topic in Theta Nu Xi's forum sparked this. Are there nicknames you prefer for your organization and some you can't stand? Perhaps it will be a lesson to us all, especially those who innocently have been using inappropriate terms to describe your org.

I'll start...

I prefer to be called a "Theta Nu" or "Theta Woman." I've found that other Theta Nus don't necessarily like to be called "ONEs" or "ONE girls." I haven't experienced this yet, so I'm not sure how I would react. I do know that I was wearing my letter pin recently and someone said, "What's ONE?" I said, "It says Theta Nu Xi. It's a multicultural sorority." Of course, I got the crazy look and have to MOVE ON!

I wanted to let you know of some nicknames I've heard people say in my college town, but I'd prefer to ask individual members of these sororities if they'd like for me to put them on this thread or not.

Those sororities are Alpha Gamma Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Delta Pi and Delta Phi Epsilon. *These nicknames are ignorant so I'm not just going to post them without consideration for your orgs!!!

Edited to add: I know there are other nickname threads, but most just stated nicknames rather than what members prefer to be called and what they hate to be called!

Nicknames..

I'm in Chi Omega, and I use Chi O a lot (and hear it a lot!) when referring to my sorority, but I hatehatehate "Chi Ho." A lot of my own sisters use it towards each other to be funny, but it just isn't funny to me, kinda sad because that's not what we are or how we'd want to represent ourselves to anyone else...so why would you want to call yourself that?

We called ourselves A-Chi-Hoes... i think the sisters in the chapter still call themselves that. Obviously its funny when WE do it, but I'd be insulted if I heard someone else say it. But I dont get offended when I hear a sister saying it.

as for nicknames, we say Alpha Chi, A-Chi-O, or just saying the letters AXO.

If someone is rude enough to use a nickname for my organization which is less than flattering... I look at them and say, "Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard that!" and then I kind of roll my eyes, so THEY are the one's looking stupid.

Precisely why I thought it best not to say them at all!

Here is a link to some of the nickname threads:

http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...ight=nicknames

http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...ight=nicknames

http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...ight=nicknames

http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...ight=nicknames

Unfortunately, these threads never stay friendly for very long and they lead to a lot of hurt feelings. I think it would be best to just refer back to the older threads if anyone wants to know nicknames. There was a thread started by LeslieEMU that has the real nicknames for the GLOs. If you do a search, you should be able to find it.

ETA:
I decided to make it easier. Here is the Real GLO Nickname thread.

Just thought of a sweet one!

Pi Beta Phi = Pi Smiles (I especially love this one since my mom is a Pi Phi)

Maybe we can change the title to "preferred nicknames: what people should call your GLO" or something like that, because this could be a good discussion.

I personally prefer Alpha Sigs or ASA (although as with most groups, we are encouraged not to use the "English" letters - and there are lots of Asian Students Associations, etc). I know some of our chapters use "Alphas" but that reminds me too much of 90210. Either that, or that we're biting on Alpha Phi Alpha.

Alpha Phi Omega=I usually use APO. I did have someone give me a hard time about that once, a while ago..."Your name is not Alpha Pi Omicron, so therefore APO is INCORRECT!"

If there is a nasty nickname for us I haven't heard it.

Lambda Omega Pi=LOPi.

I just remembered something. Before I started IU, I got a book called The Right Foot. (an unofficial guide to IU) It said that AEPhi's nickname (though it could have been Alpha Phi's...I don't know where my copy is to check!) was Phisters. I've never heard anyone else call it that though. Has anyone else heard it or might that have been something just for the IU chapter?

For Alpha Sigma Tau, I've heard "Alpha Taus", "Taus" and "ASTs". One chapter I met at convention (there's probably more than one though) were known as the "Alpha Sigs" on their campus. That really messed with my head because on my campus, ASA was known as the "Alpha Sigs".

**Apparently on my campus (when I was there) we couldn't do any nickname with less than two syllables! Here's the list that we had:
AST=Alpha Taus
ASA=Alpha Sigs
DZ=DZ (or Delta Zeta, cause it was as short as the 'nicknames')
AZD=Alpha Xis

Fraternities:
Phi Sigma Kappa=Phi Sigs
Sigma Phi Epsilon=Sig Eps
Phi Lambda Chi=Phi Lambs
Sigma Tau Gamma=Sig Taus
Theta Xi=Theta Xi (again, no need to shorten it!!)

On your campus, do all the groups have a similar naming system, or are some groups known by one word names (Taus) while others are known by two words or English letters (Sig Ep or ASA)?

Delta Sig...but we tried to change our campus nickname to just Delta because SOME people wanted us to be modeled after Delta Tau Chi.

I personally like being called an Alpha Sig, an ASA or an Alpha Sigma Alpha. We have AOTT, Alpha Phi Alpha and AKA on our campus so to be called an Alpha would be rather confusing. I have heard people call us A-Sig (which I am not offended by but don't particularly like).
