IFC and Panhellenic Apology at U of Michigan
This might cause some discussion --
The "Michigan Daily" reports that the IFC and Panhellenic officers, after three weeks of discussion and planning, are making public apologies for alcohol abuse at their recent retreat. (Only one person was hospitalized.)
See

Interestingly, although the presidents of the 10 Panhellenic sororities voted an expression of "no confidence" in Panhellenic due to the retreat incident, those on Panhellenic "decided not to resign."
I have to admit I found the story hilarious. Chalk it up to a personality flaw of mine if you wish, but statements about how people have "learned from the experience" and how they are writing personal statements about what Greek life means to them don't quite cut it for me.
However, I also admit I don't know the full details, or whether there will be any significant fallout from this incident, so I'm not going to get overly worked up about it. Except to say !

I've never been on one of these retreats, but I've heard so many stories about how much drinking goes on- it's ridiculous. And these are the leaders of our groups.....

this cracks me up...WTF is with the "no confidence" vote? Are the presidents saying none of them would ever drink in this situation?
I guess I'm forgetting that this is a bigger system where people don't know everyone in their chapter, let alone the rest of the GLOs.

I went to a Panhel/IFC retreat my sophomore year (2001), and it was out of control! It was like one big drunken orgy- much worse than a good majority of the fraternity parties I've been to.
What really caught me off guard, though, was the fact that the director of Greek Life and his sidekicks let it happen. Yes, they had different hotel rooms than we all did, but it's not like they couldn't have heard what was going on. It's hard to have them come in and bust up something in your chapter, when you know damn well that they didn't impose a single consequence at their own "event."

A vote of no confidence usually means that the people no longer trust the person/people in question, and want them to resign to be replaced with more competant/qualified personal. Or at least thats what I always believed it was.
I don't blame the presidents for issuing a vote of no confidence. Panhel is the governing body, and if the eboard can't follow the rules they create, then I don't believe they should be in the position. These women are supposed to be the public face of sorority cooperation and good faith, and they get wasted on a weekend retreat? Doesn't fly.

Maybe its cuz I go to Chico State...but I cant imagine an IFC/NPC retreat being any worse than a normal fraternity party as far as drinking goes....er any party here I guess.

Oh and someone needs to beat that freshman that made a comment. What a moron .
Matt Fisher, poster child for black balling.
Quote:
They’re telling us how to run our frats, and they end up doing what’s wrong. … I’m sure a lot of people respect their services, but they did what’s wrong,” said Kinesiology freshman Mat Fisher, who asked that his fraternity not be named. “Basically, they went behind our backs and did what’s wrong.”
Fisher added that he feels the executives should have come out earlier with the truth of the events. “Three weeks is putting it back a little too much,” he said. “They are the people that are supposed to set the example.”

To give some background on why this was incredibly stupid of them...
Over the past month and a half or so, the GLOs have been up in arms over new directives being passed down from the University administration. The new directives include deferred recruitment for all IFC and NPC groups, alcohol free housing for all fraternities and sororities and a new requirement for a resident supervisor living in each house. While NPC is only concerned about deferred recruitment because they already have alcohol free housing and resident supervisors, the fraternities are very concerned about alcohol free housing and the resident supervisor requirement. Some of them simply can't afford resident supervisors and none of them want to be alcohol free.
While a group is trying to fight administration on directives such as these, it's foolish for the leadership to have engaged in this behavior. This is the time for them to be on their best behavior.

OOOOOOH, Bad little Boys and Girls!
Oh yes, they should try to set an example but Does Stress Mean Anything?
Damn, this gets so ridiculous, it is not funny! Where do these people blow off a little steam from the Drudge of having to put up with a bunch of Do Rightious Cry Babys in and out of their Chapters/
If they are of legal age, then so what!!! If they get totaly ignorant, that is something different espcecially if it is illegal! Damn, I am a GREEK, I am pure as Snow White!
"If wishes were Chicken Shit, I would have a Full Hen House!"
Is it just because there are Greek Letters added to their names that make a Huge Difference?

I don't see what the big deal is, no body died. Some shouldn't loose their IFC/panhell position just because one person is a jack ass and doesn't know how/when to say "okay, I'm done"
