Hair coloring
Well we've got a thread for everything else, let's talk about some hair coloring. Feel free to share horror stories, tips, etc.
I just dyed mine tonight. I usually dye it myself, but I went a few shades lighter (to a medium golden blonde) tonight and I am not happy with the results. It looks sort of red/orange/brassy near the roots, which is making it look fake. It's nothing I can't go out in public with but I don't like it. So how long should I wait to re-dye it? (And please don't tell me to go get it professionally done...I have many times before and it wasn't all that fabulous...I don't feel like dropping $175 at the salon right now.)

If you've got time on your hands, places like Vidal Sassoon give you a color job for like 30 I think if you let a student do it with supervision. It looks good I hear but takes longer than usual.

i think if you dye it darker you don't have to wait that long - maybe a day or two. but if you want to remove more color you should wait at least a week.

xok85xo is right w/ the waiting times.
also, you said your hair was dyed professionally before. that's probably why you got the brassy color near your roots. that new growth hadn't been chemically treated by dye yet and took to the over-the-counter dye differently. that's why you really should go back to the salon to get your roots done, even though it costs way more. it looks better.
but seriously, it's crazy that you're paying that much, go to a cheaper salon!

I'd agree on the cost. It's definitely more than I pay and I usually get mine foiled with two colors.

I think I'm done with hair coloring forever. Throughout high school and college I colored my hair all the time. One week it was red, one week it was very blond, etc, etc. Last year I figured out my real hair color, went to a salon, and went back to my natural color. I haven't touched my hair since!!

I am that crazy girk in high school that could not pick a color. I am a natural honey blonde, but unless you get a baby picture you could not tell. I have had black hair with streaks in the front those streaks were (not at the same time):brown, blone, green, dark green, light blue, dark blue, neon yellow, purple, red.
Then I go the two layered look that the top part of my hair was wine red and the bottom black. (that was so cool)
Then I just had wine (burgandy) hair for almost 2 years (which was the longest)
Then about this time last year I dyed it dark brown and redid the blonde in front let that grow out and dyed it med brown and have been letting it grow out since Sept 2003.
I almost sit on my hair and I take really good care of it. It is soft and shiney and think, plus no split ends.

This happened to me when my mom did my highlights about 2 years ago and I looked like trailer trash. I went to a salon right away and told them what happened and had them fix it.
I was highlighting for a while, and I've been back at my natural color for about a year, but I still color it a lot because I'm ALREADY getting grays in the front. No one really notices unless I point them out, but they drive me batty.
Maybe I'll look around and see if there are any places in the area that do highlights on the cheap. I think the cheapest I've gotten them done was for $75, but that was in my hometown which is about an hour away from where I live now. I think even the Hair Cutteries around here charge $65. Maybe I'll just see if this color calms down a little bit.

I started getting my hair highlighted in high school. I always went to the salon except once I wanted to try myself... well that didnt work so well. I have fairly dark brown hair. I tried to go lighter blonde and realized I have a lot of red in my hair bc thats the color that came out. While some people liked it.. I on the other hand hated it. So now I have gone back to having just light brown highlights in my hair. I dont think I will ever try it myself again bc i have such dark hair and its so noticable when you dont do it correct.
Plus I think it could be the salon you are going to .. try somewhere else next time.. the woman who does mine doesnt charge nearly that much and takes a lot of time to make sure the color matchs really good..

I only started coloring my hair about a year ago when it was obvious that I wasn't going to turn a nice even "salt-and-pepper" pattern with my grays. (I can live with gray if it's even; my SILs both look great with it.) I have patches and stripes and random whatever so it looks awful.
I only match my original color (Clairol Nice 'N Easy #120). No problems or horror stories. But there is always ONE hair (maybe two) that just will NOT take color, no matter what.
I've been thinking of getting highlights done at my salon (which is great - top of the line hair professionals) but i"m afraid that they'll start stripping color out to do it and I don't want my hair damaged.

I know I am probably one of the only people that has never died my hair so I am probably asking a stupid question. Doesn't all that cause damage to your hair?

Sure does! But if you condition it and take good care of your hair, you would never be able to tell!! I have gone to many different salons and paid all different prices, but I was most satisfied with my last dye job- L'Oreal in a box!!!!!!!!!!!

I get mine foiled with bleach, blonde and morocian sand warm blonde high lights. My hair dresser does it for me for around $60 and she is a redkin specialist. I only use is redkin hair coloring products.
