graduation advice plz!
so i just received an email from my dean saying one of my classes didnt count for credit, so i m officially off the graduation roster...this really pisses me off since i'm only 3 credit=1 class away from walking the stage. now, i know some schools let u walk if u can finish the course in the follwing summer. what is your school policy? i need some examples to go argue with the dean. my school only have 1 ceremony a year!!! so if i dont walk now, i dont think i will ever want to...HELP!

That's why it's a wise idea to have your advisor review your transcript a semester BEFORE you are scheduled to graduate. Unfortunately that must not be a requirement at your university. If it IS, and someone told you that you were good, then you have some grounds to appeal. Otherwise, you need to find out what course was disallowed. Is is a required course or an elective? If it's an elective, can you do an independant study or self-paced online course to get the credits. If there is only one official ceremony per year, they should allow you to 'walk' through the ceremony in the spring as long as you're enrolled for the missing credits in the summer session.

I agree with dakareng. Someone I knew thought that she was getting an honours degree up until right before the ceremony, when the program listed her as a non-honours BA. She thought it was a mistake, but it turned out that she was missing a credit.

At my school, there is no specific rule about having so many credits in order to participate at graduation. A senior files for his/her degree with their own respective colleges, and signing up for the graduation ceremony is something done separately with the Bookstore. The bookstore gives you graduation instructions when you purchase your cap and gown.
And then there are students who chose to not walk at all.
My campus has a winter, spring, and summer ceremony. The spring one tends to be the largest--mine had 1316...and each student was called by name. That's how I got to sleep for 20 minutes.
So basically...anyone can participate in graduation. I don't know why anyone would want to if they're not really graduating, but oh well.

My campus just has one as well, in the spring. Sucks if you graduate in December or in the summer. Students who will graduate in the summer or have graduated the previous December are allowed to walk in the spring ceremony.
Did your advisor tell you you were good to go? If so, as someone said, you can appeal. If not, well...I don't know. I know it's disappointing, but I hope you can work it out.

Well I guess it depends if you really want to walk in the ceremony or not.
I know personally there is no way I'm walking in mine. Thousands of people graduate and the ceremony lasts for several hours and you don't even get your diploma then. It doesn't come in the mail for almost two more months while they complete the course audits to make sure that all credits were completed.
I guess the thing you can agrue with your dean is that you only have one class left and if you are allowed to walk in the ceremony, you will complete that class in the first term of the summer. Just express how you really want to walk and don't think you should have to wait a year to walk because of one class.
If you are a good student with a pretty good GPA you might have even more bargaining power.

Is your grad for all the UMs combined? If not I didn't realize your school was that big.

I didn't realize it was that big until I started going here either lol.
We have nearly 27,000 undergrads this year and several thousand more graduate students.
This year was almost a record enrollment year. The only thing is they can't really expand campus anymore and we already have a semi-satellite campus and various off campus facilities that are used for classes.
ETA
The spring ceremony is the biggest one because many people seem to wait until sprig to walk even if they graduate in December. We have three ceremonies, one at the end of summer, one in December and one im May.
