Unity Among Greeks
Okay....the Greeks at Kent State University don't really do much together..at all. We really don't speak to each other, we don't hang out...minus the occasional party we throw together. The most interaction fraternities around here get is through events in which we are forced to interact, such as Songfest. I find it rather appalling, and I've taken steps to counteract it. I've contacted 12 (including us) of the 15 fraternities located here (listed below), and spoke to them about the problem. All 12 agreed, and they also agreed to sit down with me and discuss how we can remedy it.
Alpha Epsilon Pi
Alpha Tau Omega
Delta Chi
Delta Tau Delta
Delta Upsilon
Lambda Chi Alpha
Phi Delta Theta
Phi Kappa Tau
Sigma Phi Epsilon
Sigma Tau Gamma
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Theta Chi
My question: Besides parties...what else could we do together that would improve relations?
Also, does anyone have any good ideas for a t-shirt that we could print up for all of us? None of the sorority formal rush greek week shit either...I mean....nothing like "Go Greek!" or "Greek is good!" We need something masculine and brotherly. :-D Any ideas would help. :-)

Have a fund raising event together! Showing unity within community service will earn you MAJOR brownie points on campus.

Have you talked to whoever is in charge of greek life at your university? Do you have a annual Greek week? My university experiences the same lack of unity and our greek system is a lot smaller. Have you reached out to NPHC organizations?

More than fundraising...do something CONCRETE...volunteer to build a community playground in a public housing development (raise the funds and put it together), build a house for habitate for humanity, become activitist for change on your campus by reaching out beyond your campus. Work in a shelter, feed homeless, become involved with the big brothers/big sisters program.
just a place to start.....

Ditto on this one.
For as many years as I can remember, the Greeks at Boston U hold a major philanthropic/community event at the beginning of each school year. (Usually community oriented, like cleaning up the river front, fixing a playground, etc.) Good PR for the campus and rush, great for community relations and brings the entire system together. Everyone wins.

Many of those fraternities are also at The University of Akron (Delta Tau Delta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Kappa Tau, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Theta Chi and also Sigma Nu). Maybe you could contact brothers there for ideas, and maybe even include the fraternities there!!

I would have to agree with what some of what has already been said, volunteer. Habitat for Humanity is such a wonderful organization.
As for a shirt, what sticks out in my mind is 'no matter what the letter we're all greek together'. University of Arizona used that theme for their fall 1998 rush. Now I realize that you being in a fraternity it might seem kind of girlie, but how truthful can you get on what it states. It's the truth.
'No matter what the letter we're all GREEK together'.

Find a goal that all of you guys are passionate about. Nothing brings people together like a common goal. Volunteering is a great example but make sure you really do care about the cause. Other wise it would be just another thing to do together. I was wondering do you have multicultural events??

Go to greek 101 or any of the t shirt/greek sites and look at all of their slogans.... it may give you some ideas... Or just make a t-shirt for whatever you decide to do together... like if you decide to volunteer for habitat do something with building or tools or manual labor... that's manly right ??

Drew Carey
Get Drew Carey to perform at some kind of pro-greek unity event. He is a Delt from there, so it is possible.

I agree with most of the posts here. Greek Week always serves it purpose to unify all Greeks. Usually during the Greek Week, houses are paired up and they compete in different events: lip sync, tournaments, olympics, blood drive, community service, etc.
How about tournaments? Like, pool, bowling, dodgeball, basketball, etc? They are also fun to do, while serving the purpose of unifying the fraternities.
Does Kent State have a Greek tradition, for example, the "stone painting"? That is something you can start.
Anyway, good thoughts to unify all Greeks. Keep it up!

you can try adopting a elementry school or Library. also, have a competition with the Fraternities such as who can collect the most books and donate to the Local Library.

yeah that seems to be the common consensus in many places but be rest assured that SAE is working to fix the problem. And by the way have you tried a basketball tournament or anything like that just for greeks.
