EUGENE — The University of Oregon has placed the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity on probation and required members to perform 150 hours of community service in the Bend area after a homeowner complained of damage to a house that members rented for a party.
Fraternity members also are required to write letters of apology, pay restitution for carpet cleaning and damage to a footbridge on the property, and review their policies to ensure that they comply with the UO student conduct code, said Chris Loschiavo, university director of student judicial affairs.
The discipline program is intended to be educational rather than punitive so that the young people involved can learn from their mistakes, Loschiavo said.
Robert DeMarco, the fraternity assistant executive director who oversees operations in 15 states, said the organization has not finished its internal investigation.
The disciplinary action does not settle a dispute about the amount of damage done during the weekend party that ran from Nov. 14-16 at a home in the Bend area owned by Les and Nora Brock of Portland.
Les Brock said a fraternity social director rented the 3,100-square-foot home with a false claim that he wanted to take his wife and children for a weekend.
Brock said neighbors reported as many as 23 vehicles and 75 individuals at the house through the weekend. He said the revelers cut down two trees and caused extensive smoke damage from a large bonfire outside.
Brock said the damage totaled about $20,000. Insurance covered all but a $2,000 deductible, but the couple also suffered lost rental income while they made repairs, he said.
