20 Steps for Community Survival
This was written by Doug Bactel, UGA Professor. Subsitute "community" for GLO and/or chapter. Some of the sentences don't fit exactly but you get the idea.
Visual evidence of community pride.
Continual emphasis on quality in business and community life.
Willingness to invest in the future.
Participatory approach to community decision-making.
Cooperative community spirit.
Realistic appraisal of future opportunities.
Awareness of competitive positioning.
Knowledge of the existing social and physical environment by citizens and decision makers.
Active, well funded and staffed community and economic development programs.
Deliberate transition of power to a younger generation of leaders.
Acceptance of women and minorities in leadership roles.
Strong believe in and support for traditional and non-traditional educational institutions including lifelong learning.
Problem-solving approach to providing health care with an emphasis on alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention programs.
Strong multi-generational family orientation.
Solid presence of traditional institutions that are integral to community life.
Attention to sound and well-maintained infrastructure.
Prudent use of fiscal resources.
Sophisticated and wide-spread use of information resources.
Willingness to seek help from the outside.
The conviction that, in the long run, you must do it yourself.
