Poll: Is MLKs birthday a STATE holiday where you live?

LAs newly inaugurated Governor signed the law establishing MLK a STATE holiday this week. I always thought it was...

Anyway, is Monday a STATE holiday where you live?

Wow, this week? I thought it was a state, as well as federal, holiday everywhere. I know Arizona just came aboard about 5-7 years ago, under the threat of losing the Super Bowl.

As Tom Joyner said, "now, that's some hate. you ain't never gotta "force me" to take a holiday."

...and Ohio is closed on Monday.

Yes it is here in New Jersey, but I find it interesting, well "suspect" that my company offers pay at time and a half for anyone who wants to work that day.

I thought companies had to pay you time and a half for working on all federal or state holidays? I know my company does, whether its MLK, Memorial Day, or Christmas.

I am not well versed in labor laws, so I'm sure someone will clear it up.

Its a holiday in Kansas. Banks, schools, municiple offices will be closed, but I will be at work.

We've had the holiday at universities and in SOME local school districts, but I guess city and state workers had to go to work.

It is here in Cali, but I remember when I was younger, I went to private schools where they didn't take MLK day off. My parents made sure that my sister and I were out of school on MLK day, participating in activities with them. So, as an adult, I've worked for companies that didn't take the day off....well, of course I did...and would have dared them to deny it.

They don't offer the option or "incentive" to work on Election or Columbus Day(s) when our office is closed, that is why I find it "suspect."

in my planner, MLK day is marked as a US holiday. never considered it to be just a state holiday, but perhaps some states dont observe it. i cant imagine not observing it.

MLK Day's been a state holiday in Hawaii for almost a decade now, I think. All schools, financial institution, and most services observe this holiday. They got rid of Columbus/Discoverers' Day.

Here in Michigan I believe most places celebrate MLK day but our new president here at our university comes from the UP (Upper Peninsula) and up there the day was not observed. We made sure she didn't bring those old ways down here though

Not in Canada! But I work in Washington State and it is a holiday!

Edited to add: The next Civic holiday in Canada is Easter. There was talk about having another holiday between New Years and Easter. I think the King holiday would be perfect...ya think?
