Movie: Cold Mountain

Go see this movie. It was excellent. With Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zwelliger . . .. Excellent story. . .

Also, about how old is Nicole ? Cause she is absolutely gorgeous in this movie. All women need to write to her and ask her what her secret skin products are because he skin is unreal.

How does she do that:?

This is an excellent movie! As for her age, I think she is mid-30s, 36-7 maybe.

Really? I've been a little skeptical about it.

I read the book, and at least from the previews of the movie... the movie looked WAY melodramatic and overindulgent, whereas the book was pretty matter-of-fact. It was a love story, but it wasn't... sappy.

Perhaps I just got the wrong vibe from the previews.

I read this book when it came out my freshman year in college. It was based on the area where I went to college, so of course I was going to read it! I loved the book, and this movie is one of the FEW times when a movie actually is pretty similar to the book. I do agree though, that the book wasn't as sappy. But that's what Hollywood is all about! We go see movies to forget about our lives for 2, 3 maybe 4 hours and they have to give us something to laugh or cry about.

But it is a GREAT movie!

I loved this movie too. There are some sappy parts, but they're not too bad. I think the director balanced out the sappiness with good action scenes and comedy. You really get involved in the story. I especially enjoyed Renee Zellweger's character. And Nicole is 36. I think she has good genes and a good makeup artist.

I don't think so. The movie is different in tone from the book, and makes some, shall we say, politically correct changes to the story.

The pseudo-Southern Appalachian accents are a bit hard for anyone who knows what the real thing sounds like to take, as well. Of course, Kidman's character is from Charleston, so she is entitled to a low-country Southern accent, which she sort of has, but the other main characters just seem to have generic Southern accents, and not very good ones, at that.

Still a good movie.

I thought Cold Mountain was wonderful. I enjoyed it very much.
I am from the South, born and raised and living in a very Southern town now, Oxford, MS. I felt the accents were very good, I've seen some movies where the accents are just horrible, darling. I felt the picture was wonderful and I would go and see it again in a second.

I respectfully disagree, accents were wretched. I am from Charleston, and saw no hint at an attempt to get the accents right, sorry, maybe they sounded like mississippi accents, I wouldn't know. The book was good, the movie was good. It was a great film in terms of scenery and acting (Renee steals the show), Nicole was beautiful, but the love story didn't really work. It jut wasn't there, I am sorry. There was not enough time devoted to the romance, but it was still a good movie. But I will tell you one thing, the cast was simply great. So many wonderful bit parts. GO SEE IT!!!!!

"Glory", now that is a good film.....

If you are from North Carolina, particularly western North Carolina (as I am) you will mock their accents for the rest of your life!!

In a sense, this gets at the root of point I was trying to make. Many people (and especially many actors) who are not from the South seem think there is one Southern accent, which is usually a Deep South (Mississippi or Atlanta, e.g.) accent. Some might recognize two accents -- what might be called a cultured accent and a redneck accent. In fact, there are a whole bunch of differents accents.

Listen to someone like Loretta Lynn or Dolly Parton, or watch "Coal Miner's Daughter," and you'll get a much better idea of how the mountain folk in "Cold Mountain" ought to sound. I think breathesgelatin is right -- anyone familiar with the North Carolina mountains would find the accents in "Cold Mountain" to miss the mark by a wide margin.
