The return Of Old School Music
I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks of music going back to an "Old School" style. I've noticed new artists are using instruments again giving us more of a live concert feel.
I really enjoy the works of Bilal, Erika Badu, Musiq, Jill Scott, as well as many others. I feel it's sorta refreshing to hear about more than how much someone shines or "Blings".
(I'm really glad to see Sade back on the scene again too.)

Just to hear words that I can understand will be a blessing. Rap is a strain on these old ears.

I agree, whole heartedly.
I love the music of Musiq, and Jill Scott, but what's important to me, as a mother of a young child, is that I don't have to keep flicking the station to find music that's appropiate.
If I have to turn away from "give me that stuff, that funky, sweet, that GUSHY stuff" one more time, I'm going to slap the daylights out of Jay Z.

I agree with all of ya: Todays' mainstream rap and r&b music is often tasteless, non-thought provoking, and a waste of my time and money.
Luckily, artists like Jill Scott (I constsntly bump her CD EVERYWHERE I go) , Jamiroquai, Erykah Badu (I'm waitin' for "Mama's Gun" too), Blackstar, etc. are "Keeping Hope Alive."
BTW, Musiq's Cd came out yesterday (I think...). Did anyone pick it up? What do ya think of it?

I have to be honest with you, I haven't bought it yet, but I listened to the majority of his tracks on Napster. I LOVE IT !!!!! The grooves are so nice and I wasn't in the least bit disappointed in any of them. I know for a fact I will be picking it up this weekend. As someone previously stated"I hope this isn't a fad, but mainstay"

Yes, I do agree. I am anxiously awaiting the release of Mama's Gun (Erykah Badu). Regarding rap music, I still like the mellow stuff like Common (The Light) and The Roots. Anyways, I hope this evolution is not a trend, but a mainstay.

I'm with you Miss Mocha! That song by Ludicris..."I wanna LICK LICK LICK you from your head to your toes???? @#$%^&*@
You know kids pick up on that stuff and those songs leave NOTHING to the imagination!
It's scary to listen to the radio with kids in the car these days, I mean now they're even able to say most profanity that used to be banned.
If you guys haven't checked out Musiq, Jill Scott.ect. You're missing something wonderful.

I have to agree that I am really feeling the rebirth of the old school style. I love me some Musiq Soulchild and India Arie!!! These are songs that everyone can listen too old and young. I know everyone I know is feeling "Love" by Musiq.(I KNOW I AM)
But at the same time I am not going to get rid of my Ludacris, Jay-Z, etc... because I'm also feeling that "Change The Game Remix" with Daz and Kurupt.
I'm a really versatile listener so I'm loving it all!!!

I have 6 songs from Sunshine Anderson's joint on there. I LOVE LOVE LOVE India Arie's CD especially Brown Skin, Promises, I SEE GOD IN YOU, FEADY FOR LOVE, STRENGTH, COURAGE & WISDOM.
I also applaud her intro, interlude and outro. They are REAL interludes.

Hey all...
I agree that some songs are getting way outta hand. A friend of mine was telling me today that she had to chastise/school her 3 year old last night because of a song that he was repeating and didn't realize what he was saying. It's some song that goes vaguely like "You gonna pay my rent...Hell Naw...You gonna buy me this...Hell Naw" So he's walking around the house saying "hell naw...hell naw" LOL...I know it's not funny, but I really felt bad for him b/c she popped him, and I don't think that's fair b/c he didn't know any better...if she doesn't want him to repeat things...she shouldn't let him hear it!
Anyway...my 'nappy' name is SavvyDiva
