Lovely how LOVELINE's turned racist!
The following was printed in today's edition of my local paper, The Honolulu Advertiser. Of course it's not going to get national attention because...well, most people don't give a damn about us anyway. They just like our weather and beaches, apparently.
KPOI, listeners cry foul
By Lee Cataluna
Advertiser Columnist
The bad thing is that folks who get paid to be funny in national media would even say something so extremely insulting.
The good thing is that, this time, Hawai'i listeners and local station managers immediately and decisively stood up and called the foul.
On Sunday night, syndicated radio show "Loveline," aired locally on KPOI 97.5, contained the following interchange between hosts Dr. Drew Pinsky, a medical doctor, and Adam Carolla, a comic and former host of Comedy Central's "The Man Show":
Dr. Drew: I wonder if Hawai'i has weathermen.
Adam Carolla: I'm sure.
D: Cause it's the same everyday, no matter what.
C: Maybe they don't. Hawaiians are too dumb. They can't figure out barometric pressure. They don't know what that means.
D: They have wind some days.
C: Here's the problem with weather in Hawai'i. There's a bunch of big words.
D: Yeah.
C: And they can't handle big words over there, because they're the world's dumbest people.
D: Well, they can't (sic) handle big words, but they must have three letters.
C: Yeah, they handle big words, but it's got to be the name of a fat chick or some drink. They don't do science. Close your eyes and picture all the great Hawaiian scientists over the years. (Laughs) They're retarded people. They stay on the island. They're in-bred, obviously. They're the dumbest people we have.
D: I have met some smart South Pacific people. Not who lived there.
C: People are smart enough to move. Everyone close your eyes and think of all the amazing contributions the Hawaiian scientific community has made over the years. (Long pause) Uh ... They're stupid people.
D: All right. Let's hear from them. Let's hear what they have to say. It'd be interesting to hear what they have to say.
C: What, the Hawaiians? First off, they don't know how to dial the phone. They can't call. They don't know what they're doing. They have big calves. That's all. They're stupid people. We really should start bringing some of them in 'cause they're strong. They're a strong, sturdy breed.
Whoa.
OK, yeah, it's a show about sex, drugs and assorted weirdness and, yeah, a good deal of talk radio these days is all about the value of shock and insult. But whoa.
Much to their credit, KPOI management, after fielding "a bunch" of angry phone calls from listeners, decided to pull the show immediately and permanently.
"It was pretty bad. I can see why people listening can take offense to it," said Ryan Kawamoto, KPOI program director. "To have something like that is pretty horrible."
So now, Carolla and Dr. Drew can say what they want. Hawai'i just doesn't have to listen. We're smarter than that.

Good for the station managers. Nothing about that exchange was even remotely funny.

And again your sense of humor freaking sucks.
Would you be laughing if Adam and Dr. Drew generalized your people (knowing their history of oppression) that way?
If this is your idea of a 'joke', then you may as well shut your traps now.
K THX. Merry Christmas.

People's ignorance absolutely amazes me. There was absolutely nothing humorous (off color or not) about that...and I mean, what year is this???? Haven't we learned that we don't make fun of ANY race of people???

aww, i'm sorry that you think my sense of humor sucks. Guess if i ever visit Hawaii, i'd better be on guard for random machete attacks?
Would i be laughing? Well, i don't really get all pissy about too many things concerning the plight of NA's, mostly because i don't consider myself enough NA to validate it. Yeah, the Redskin thing pushes my buttons, but that's a EXTREMELY bigoted thing and anyone that considers themself a mature educated human being should be just as offended by it. Yeah, i'm a registered member of the tribe, but only because my family has an established history within the tribe. I don't get on a soapbox with my 1/64th blood and project myself as a "Poor Indian from the Rez".
But, if Adam did, i'd probably laugh. The guy may be a closet genius, but from what i've seen from the Man Show and on Loveline, he's basically a shock comedian. Yeah he said some pretty hateful things, boycott the station, do all that kinda stuff.
Now, if W, Colin Powell, Joe Lieberman, Connie Rice, Bill Clinton, Tom Daschle(well you get the point) said something along those lines, then i'd probably be more offended by it. I consider those individuals to be educated people and policymakers in this country. Their opinions matter a little more than me to Adam Corolla's(sp).

What they said, sucks - it is totally wrong for people to generalize like that! However, I live in Kentucky and I get that all the time. How many times do I have to hear Jay Leno and others joke about incest and how we wear no shoes. That gets on my nerves so bad!!! I'm sorry, but I have lots of shoes - and to my knowledge known of the people I know are incest, in fact the thought makes us all sick. Stupid people!

If they were talking smack about your "beloved Texas" you'd prolly be freaking out and pulling out Alamo history.

If someone so much as even tries to 'water the plants' in the wee hours of the morning at the Shrine to Texas Liberty, that's usually enough for someone to be exiled from our beloved Republic! Ask Ozzy Osbourne about that... he was lucky we didn't execute him on the spot! )
Being part-Hispanic, it irritates the living sh*t outta me when we're generalized as lazy, shiftless 'wetbacks' who just crossed the Rio Grande to take a low-paying job that no Anglo wants. Or when someone makes the mistake that Hispanic = Mexican. There's about another fifteen countries with their own national identity that speak the same Spanish language, although with differences in slang and accent. (My mother's family is from Venezuela.)

Yeah,
if it was someone educated whose opinion mattered. If carolla said it, i'd shrug it off with a, "what does he know, he's a damn piss-poor comedian"
Nice try though.
And it's not my "beloved Texas". I actually do love it, so its' fair to say it without quotes. You could have went with "Great" Texas, or "Supreme" Texas, because those are subjective statements. My love for Texas though, is a well known fact.
Thank you, drive through.

I have to agree with Kitso. Not to marginalize what Adam said but he generalizes all types of people. Im black and hes said some off color things about blacks but I let it roll off because I dont really care what he thinks. Otherwise Loveline is a pretty funny show. It makes my life seem normal. lol

Not to nitpick, but isn't racism different from regional jokes and discrimination? Regardless, I think they're jerks for that and they'll probably get herpes.
-Rudey
--I'd ask that they remove their broadcast right in HI and see if you can get another state to jump on as well.

AFAIK, yes, they're different.
I've always believed that racism was discrimination or a prejudice based on someone's race. I also thought that it was believing that one's race is better, and because of that, the inferior race was "different", as far as character and abilities are concerned.
In Dr. Drew's and Adam's case, they thought we were "dumb" and we look funny (because we have big calves--which obviously isn't the case because I have chicken legs ). Judging by those comments alone, they generalized the fact we're less capable than they average human being.
So yes, I know the truth and none of what they say is true. Just because their images of my people are based on Lilo & Stitch and just because they're not the most educated and respected people doesn't mean what they said is something to overlook.
I see their comments as both a regional joke (a dumb one) and racism, I guess.
If what I wrote doesn't make sense, I apologize. Too much eggnog and Crown at grandma's house.
