closed chapters?

Is there any record of all the chapters that are closed during a year for hazing or questionable actions? I keep seeing stuff on greeklife about different ones that were and it makes me really wonder. New ones open every year, but are we gaining or losing?

I think we are losing . . over all.

Although I don't have empirical evidence of it.

The best way to get information may be to contact the major umbrella groups.

Nicindy.org

and

the link for NPC. I keep forgetting it.

I am sure they keep track .

Otherwise you probably have to contact each organization individually . . .

But you could do it pretty quickly with emails . . . in about 10 minutes.

Let's start to count: here's a possible No. 1

9/7/02
ORONO — Investigators looking into the cause of a fire that damaged a University of Maine fraternity house found dozens of stolen signs from highways, construction sites and businesses across Maine.

Altogether, 56 signs worth about $10,000 were seized from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house, said Sgt. Stewart Jacobs of the state fire marshal's office

and they did have some nice sign's in their house... but yeah its a pretty big thing here in Maine that most of the frat house's do have road signs in their houses but it is rare that it has anything to do with hazing most of the brothers find street signs with their names on it and just take it down at night if they really want it and then show it off... ok sorry for the rambling... but as for the fire it was electrical and was not hazing... hope that helps a little

That's my impression as well.

About four years ago at Karnea (our international conference) during the opening session, they had the chapter consultants go around the ballroom and remove the banners from closed chapters.

Here's the math:

Karnea happens every other year.

We can colonize or recolonize three chapters per year (average).

We closed eleven chapters in the two years prior to that Karnea.

To be fair, though, I think things have gotten better recently, and I wasn't able to attend last Karnea, so again, this is only my impression.

Losing, but national orgs won't admit it. Even if the national colonized 3 new chapters a year and closed 2 they would still be losing. The old chapters are a hell of a lot more valuable than the new ones. If a national shuts down a 150 year old chapter with 100 actives, 3000 alumni, and a 3 million dollar house and then they colonize a new chapter with 40 actives and no house that isn't exactly even swap.

I think average chapter size is also down. Even if the org has 10% more chapters they could be losing ground if the average chapter size is down by more than 10%.

Max,

Good point. I suspect that's why we see a lot of the older, bigger schools being recolonized. At least that's the way it appears to me.

That way, that alumni base you talk about, although interrupted, is still there.

I could be wrong but I think I read somewhere on the NPC site that NPC numbers are actually up.

Also most of the groups here are thinking about the numbers purely in NIC/NPC/NPHC terms but the past 10 years have really shown the growth of the Multicutural GLO's that aren't on the three major governing councils. So maybe the growth of these organizations may make up the difference.

I just heard that our gross numbers are up -- but number of chapters is still down. Good recruiting/rush I guess.
