No frills rush
After reading a post in another thread, I thought I'd start this one. I apologize if there has been another thread on this in the past but I'm lazy and dont want to sift through all the threads.
I'd like to see rush at a school that was strict with no frills rushing. My alma mater where I became Theta had one day that was skit day. The other school I was at prior where I went through rush and quit after the first day because I didnt feel like it was for me at that school had a skit thing every day of rush, but I was told the third round parties had the longest skits. i dont know if they still do that though.
Is no frills a common thing? I know it's supposed to be strongly encouraged, but is it really being strongly encouraged across the board? Or is it being delibrately ignored if you will on some campuses.........This question has actually come up before on another board I frequent without any answers given. So I'm curious to know myself.

My school isn't very frilly... we don't have specific rules about what "frills" and such you CAN"T use... but panhell sets a 500 dollar budget for the whole week. =)

My school has a VERY strict no frills rush. No themes, no skits, no flowers, no similar clothing, and there are a lot of decorations you can't have, ect... It is henious, and Panhell gives Rush infractions for everything, even saying Rush instead of Recruitment.

If we're not careful...sometimes a "no frills" rush can turn into a "NO FUN" RUSH!

see, that's what I hate to have happen. No frills is supposed to be a spirit of things - i.e., not having to worry about elaborate decorations/themes/clothes and using the energy you would have expounded on that in getting to know the rushees better (not to mention saving $$). It isn't supposed to be a big infraction fest where the sororities are all telling on each other. Unfortunately, that's what it's become at some schools and that's why people turn up their noses when you say no frills.

I guess you'd say that we have a no frills Rush.
Day 1: Open House. Simply meet girls and get to know them. Talk about high school, what they want to do at Florida Tech, why they're interested in a sorority.
Day 2: Skit Night. Talk about your representative sorority, get to know any new girls that didn't show up the day before, 10 minute skit.
Day 3: Pref Night. Talk to the girls about why they'd make a great ABC, ceremony, all that great stuff.
We used to have 4 days, a philanthropy night, but the girls thought it was too long and grew impatient. I thought it was fun, but oh well.

See, that's just over the top to me! What if one of the dinosaur alumnae says "rush"? It's not like you can control that!
As 33girl said, the spirit of the No Frills option was to lessen the stress on the sisters, and cut the costs.
I can remember one abyssmal rush - RECRUITMENT!! - that we had when our alumnae said afterwards, "The cost of rush was X. You took Y number of new members. That means each new member cost you Z." I think we shaped up after that just so we didn't have to endure that speech again! ACK!

I'd be frightened by that speech myself...especially coming from a school where the number for quota was typically around 10 or so, and each sorority had $1000 to spend for the entire week....therefore each chapter spent $100 for each girl that accepted a bid (if they made quota). It just seems so cold and calculated when you look at it that way...and for chapters who struggle and only take one or two girls out of the ten....

Ugh, that reminds me of the year that we got only one new member through formal recruitment (the most any sorority got was THREE). As we told her when preparing for the next formal recruitment, "We spent 750 bucks to get Nik, and we could have gotten her for free! We love you Nik, but this year we want a few more girls for our buck."
She laughed.

rush
at my school- there are only 5 sororities... 4 national... and mine- which is local.... I'm not sure the figures about how much is spent on rush... I was rush chair for this past fall which was informal- and I spent about 500 maybe? not even i would guess- it was my first time around and we weren't sure what we were doing- numbers had been really low and the previous rush chair had graduated- and we had some pretty unsuccessful years due to a pretty bad reputation (the fat ugly girls... ) so i wanted to completely revamp everything... we got some girls... but we'll only get better- ANYWAY i'm off topic.... i think the other sororities- probably spent like 1000 i woul dguess- their rush is usually bigger- they are nationally backed and have strong rush chairs (needless to say the competition was pretty formidable.. eek!) the only thing we can do is take notice and pay attention to waht they did.... its usually not too crazy-
the first two days are spent in our student union (its split- 2 sororities randomly chosen for the first day and the other three the next) and there i saw lots of balloons- lights that kind of thing.... (i did a birthday party type theme b/c it was our 75th- we did blue and white balloons- and put our composities and paddles up- that kind of thing)
the next day is informal meeting at the houses- where they can come in- meet everyone- get a house tour- and then we vote give out bids for pref night (we call it final tea) and then they go to the mailboxes- get their bids and go to the houses they want to see....
then final tea- we do our ceremony- and the girls leave- we vote- and give bids to the mailboxes....
then- the next day informal is allowed to start and we can do wahtever we want.... its pretty competitive esp considering we don't ever get big numbers MAYBE 30 at the most... anyway- enough babbling- sorry! oh yea- we dress alike for these events all black for final tea.... jeans and rush shirts for the other days- we get all thes ame rush shirts- with like a saying on the back and letters on the front- and then each sorority usually orders individual shirts too

We have no frills recruitment at our school. I went through rush as a freshman when i went to Ole miss and that definitely had all the frills. I didnt join a sorority there but when I transfered back home I go to a commuter college so I decided to join. Our recruitment is definitley no frills. We might have only 45 girls going through rush and only 4 sororities on campus. We can only spend $600. I think I liked frilly rush better ... it made me feel more important ... but as for putting on rush I am sure it is easier doing it with no frills.
