That is a very interesting question. Personally, I am fascinated with selective organizations founded by and for African Americans, especially those founded early in this century, considering the "way things were" for Negroes back then. Just a question, but I am also interested in anyone's thoughts on OES, the Links, Jack and Jill and the Girlfriends.
I am currently reading "Our Kind of People". The novel is extremely enlightening about another world that I have yet to be exposed. I really do not know how I feel about these organizations that were "elite" but at the same time extremely empowering. Does any one share my sentiment?
I do share your sentiment. I have mixed emotions about the things I read in "Our Kind of People". On one hand I think it's wonderful that organizations were formed to benefit our people, but it seems they were only meant to benefit some of our people. It also seems that joining some of the other organizations is based more on lineage than personal merit.
My aunt has been an Eastern Star for over twenty years and I did not find out to the day of my college graduation. It was so odd how I found out too. She had a white dress on and I was like look at you looking like an Eastern Star in all that white. And she was like I am one. I was like damn!!! Talk about family secrets.
