Reclaming Bruhs...

I need to know some "tactics," for reclaming a bruh that has not been active in a while. I actually just found out that we were bruhs through a conversation here at work. Come to find out that one of his undergrad. chapter bruhs, was one of my mentors in high school.

Thanks for posting this topic. We have about 6 brothers that my chapter is currently trying to bring back into the fold and we do need to come up with some creative ideas to get them back.

I can't wait to hear the responses..

a few suggestions...

1. Start inviting them to the chapter's upcoming activities:
community, civic events, voter drives, mentoring, etc..

2. Put them in the chapter's information loop:
--add them to the chapter's e-mail roster
--(if it's not cost prohibitive) add them to chapter's snail mail roster;

3. Invite em' to chapter parties (and tell em' plenty of AKAs will be there).

4. Is your chapter having a Super Bowl party this Sunday? If so, invite the inactive bruhs. Give em' a reason to again feel "the Alpha spirit."

5. Always"chat up" the chapter's work. After all, he loves Alpha just like you do; when he hears what he needs to hear, bruh(s) will come home.

6. Call their home phone and leave the Alpha Hymn on their message (well, I'm kinda trippin' with that one but, hey, it may work for somebody.)

I am reactivating with the Sorority after a looooong hiatus, and even though I kept in touch with some of my sands, I still really didn't know what my chapter was doing within the community. One of the things that I'm planning to suggest, as Tony did in a different way, is a chapter newsletter. Snail-mail it, e-mail it, but if they see what you're doing, that might bring them back, because most people want to be where the "action" is.

Talk to them when you see them; are they having financial problems that may permit them from paying dues? Did life just get in the way? There may be a way that the chapter can help.

I'm hoping that my chapter will embrace the idea of a newsletter, because that will keep them abreast of what is going on. I understand that the list of inactive sorors in my small chapter is probably longer than the list of actives (which is about 35 women in number).

And TonyB, you might be joking about your hymn, but nearly every time I hear ". . .we'll help each other; for we know there's no other. . ." I get all mushy!

I don't have any "tried and true" tactics as of yet, but the way I see it, there are three types of Brothers:

1) The young and single
2) The married (with children)
3) The retirees


I think that no matter what you do, make sure you have your target brothers in mind. Research, think it through. Ask yourself:

"Can I reclaim a brother in his fifties with a chapter happy hour?"

"Will Brothers with children prefer weeknight chapter meetings or Saturday morning/afternoon meetings?"

"How can we attract graduates of the last decade while still retaining our chapter's flavor?"

"What type of events will draw ALL types of Brothers?"

So, I don't know....this is an ongoing issue in my chapter, and I hope we are able to reclaim all types of Brothers to create a truly intergenetational chapter.

...just my opinion, but I think any true Alpha brother is going to be reclaimed by being re-exposed to what's already in him. Once that fire is re-lit, his passions for Alpha will reignite and he'll find his place of service within the chapter. Besides, any chapter worthy of the letters should have a variety of activies/opportunities/event going on from which a brother can choose to work.

btb, contgratulations on your reactivation and I feel you, (cause the Alpha hymn is special to me) but going uhm, "all mushy" as you say ain't really part of the deal.

(if ya gots to get emotional, take it the backroom somewhere!)

Interesting question, AKA2D,
I guess you show (or tell) the bruh (or soror, in yall's case) that:

1. they're missed/needed/loved
2. they're walking away doesn't change (or better) the situation they're upset about.
3. Ask their financially active line-mates to stay in their ears.
4. (This may seem odd) but if rival orgs are strong, appeal to their sense of "camaraderie." An example... locally, AKA/DST go to war in fundraising, charity work, etc.. all to the community's benefit. I gotta think it makes both orgs stronger. Alphas dominate in the community and put in work, as do others, but if the rivalries were more intense, we'd ALL be better, and inactive bruhs might be more willing to rejoin the fight.

I dislike intake, but if I let my distaste make me walk away instead of helping devise/push an alternative plan to restore "pledging" that passes legal muster (stay tuned, cause Ohio always leads the way!!), then I haven't done all I can for Alpha.

There are ole heads that just ain't gon hear it. All you can do is keep your fraternal hand extended and go ahead and work with the talent on hand. In our case, like yall's, I know that's enough to get the job done.
