re-rushing as a member

ok heres the thing...i may go back to dallas for a semester to go to community college (i am going through a really tough stage in my life...and need the comforts of home) and then go to KU next year...but i am already a member of Delta Gamma here at UNL, so i was wondering how does that work out? because wouldn't i hit alumni status by then? could i still go through rush as a dee gee and hopefully pledge dg?

Look at your national affiliation bylaws. You might need to get to know them, and then see if you and the other chapter are compatiable, they may or may not beable to have additional numbers due to total. Talk to someone from your nat'l org or the chapter you want to affiliate with.

If you've been fully initiated into Delta Gamma, you can't pledge another group, so I'm not sure why you'd want to go through rush again.

as far as i know, you should be able to affiliate with a delta gamma chapter at your new school, as long as they are in good standing and able to take in additional members. perhaps you should write to the DG chapter at the school you plan on attending and ask them how you, as an initiated member from another chapter, can become involved with their chapter after you transfer.

i think this is common with transfer students who go from their school of initiation to another school with their specific GLO - delta gamma, in your case.

you will not have to go through rush again - nor would you be allowed to, i believe.

This depends on several things.

Each national has different rules. For example, in Pi Phi, your initiating chapter will need to fill out an introduction form for the transferring chapter. Then the transferring chapter will meet the member and vote on membership for her.

My impression is that in some groups and in some chapters of some groups it's pretty much understood that you could transfer in. However, there is no guarantee, depending on the group and chapter. I know that in the past many groups have had problems with people rushing and initiating at one chapter and then trying to transfer into another school where that group was "cooler", regardless of whether or not they fit in with the transferring chapter. Therefore, it is not a guarantee by any means. You will need to check Delta Gamma policy and keep in mind these types of issues.

If you're already an initiated member, you won't go through Recruitment again because...well, you're already an initiated member. I don't understand the "Will I get to be a DG again?" question. If you haven't been initiated yet, you can go through Recruitment one year after you drop your NM-ship. Your chances for another Recruitment might be different though as there's no guarantee that you'll receive a bid from DG again. Your class standing will probably change after a year. If you've already been initiated...well, you know the obvious.

I've seen chapter sisters go inactive for various reasons who have the intention of coming back to the chapter (or transferring to another one). At this time they paid a set of inactive dues and notified us of whether or not they were coming back, if they wished to affiliate with another chapter, or if they wanted to be automatically placed into alumna status.

breathesgelatin does illustrate an affiliation policy that is similar to ours. The first chapter writes a letter of introduction, the receiving chapter's Executive Council (or whatever you guys call it) then meets to discuss (Can they take in more members?, How can she be benefitial to our chapter?, etc.) and if they approve (some chapters and orgs. have to have a unanimous vote, some dont) they'll notify you on what actions need to be taken. I know for us, there is a small fee involved when a member wishes to affiliate.

But I reiterate, there is NO GUARANTEE that you can automatically affiliate. Not trying to be mean, just throwing it out there that there could be a ton of factors that might prevent you from doing so.

But then again, I'm an Alpha Gam, not a DG...so your best bet would be to talk to your Chapter Advisor and see what your options are.

I posted in your other thread about this...but I'll post here too.

YES, you will still be a DG (no matter what) - as long as you don't resign membership you will ALWAYS be a DG. As far as transfering...when you get to your new school you will be welcomed to Delta Gamma - you will probably have to go through a few weeks of a "trial period" of sorts where you get to know your sisters at your new school. If everything clicks then you just affiliate with their chapter. If you do not affiliate with their chapter, for whatever reason, you will be an Alumn.

If you have anymore DG specific questions like this PLEASE feel free to stop by the Delta Gamma forum...we are all so nice an d promise that we do not bite!

i think so

Well we had a girl (from my DG chapter) transfer to a the University of Kentucky and she was taken with open arms. As far as I know you will be able to be a DG at the school you go to. I'm not totally for sure, but the way I understood it the chapter votes and if they decide then you will be able to. But seeing as how you are one of their sisters and you have been initiated and all I dont see any reason why they wouldn't vote you in. The only reason i could see is if you didnt really seem interested which doesnt seem to be the case. But goodluck and i hope everything works out for you.

i could be wrong, but i think the issue is that before she's transferring to UK, she is taking a semester at a community college.

so for that semester she would automatically take alum status - is it possible to come back from alum status to active again if you transfer schools twice?

I don't know why the # of schools would matter - anyway, her first transfer is going to a school that doesn't have DG.

I think that some sororities do say you may only be active for X number of semesters total, but I'm not sure which ones.

I understand the concept of why you would want to have a trial period for affiliate members, but isn' t that sort of against the rules? One would think an initiated member, should she want to affiliate, would be welcomed regardless. Voting on a member who is already initiated seems a little bogus to me....but then we have always welcomed affiliates at my chapter.

There are several other threads about affiliating with a new chapter after transferring.

One of the reasons some sororities have the "wait a semester/year to affiliate" policy is they have had problems with a woman joining at a smaller chapter or school, then transferring to a bigger school with a more popular chapter. The woman never intended to stay at the first school, she was just using them so she wouldn't have to go through rush at a big school and risk not getting into the GLO she wanted.

This of course does not apply to most women, but it became a very real problem for some groups, and I do not blame them in the least for trying to protect their sisters from this kind of manipulation. It's one thing to welcome someone who truly wants to be a sister, it's another thing to be forced to accept someone who is only using you to further her social status.
