Illegal Street Racing

Ok, I'm pissed and I'm going to vent, so TS.

Last night there was another innocent death last night in San Diego due to illegal street racing. For those of you who don't know or haven't seen the MTV show on it, San Diego is like the capitol of illegal street racing. Every night, a bunch of kids our age gather around on a street and race these suped up cars that look like Batmobiles for a large sum of money. Often times there are crashes, and often times people die. Sometimes, like last night, an innocent motorist gets struck and killed by a racer who didn't see the car up ahead.

There have been 15 deaths in San Diego alone this year due to this crap. Now, I know I shouldn't be knocking people for something they love to do, but not only is this completely unproductive, it's completely dangerous.

My friend Rebecca, a 4.0 student and star soccer player was killed in a race this summer.

I'm sick and tired of hearing about deathes due to these things. So do me a favor, either go to Quallcomm Stadium and do it legally where it's safe and yes, it can be fun, or just stop wasting your hard earned money on something that will basically get you no where in life....or end someone else's.

Sorry if I offended anyone, I just wish this crap would stop.

I agree.. I work in a strip-mall next to one of these Honda chop shop things that builds these cars... Punks go through our parking lot around 60-80 MPH. I'm surprised no one's been killed.

This is one of those things where the government and police should step in.... The cars should be deemed NOT street legal. Any time they are found on a normal street all the modification parts should be confiscated. It's also hard to believe that entepreneurs have not yet built tons of tracks to drive these things on.

Why does everyone want to be Vin Diesel?

Most of the time when Five-O does break up the races, they do search all the cars and either fine the driver or confiscate the illegal parts.

This is exactly why I hated the Fast and The Furious. Now EVERYONE wants to imitate this stuff.

Thumbs down

There have been about 5 deaths in San Antonio because of it. Its rediculious. Throw the book at the fools. Threre is a big trial going on right now here. The law needs to be changed to make it a felony on subsequent offenses.

My ex-fiancee would do a little street racing on the fricken interstate! How stupid is that! All of the sudden we'd be racing a porche and going 150+ mph! I didn't appreciate the fact that if we got into a car accident at that speed we would have both died. Not to mention the fact that he never wore his seat belt!
DUH!

My best friend's fiancee however does a little bit of racing...but they go to a track for it. Every once in a while they'll do something on the street, but not a lot. There aren't too many drags around here where you can do this sort of thing and have no one around watching.

I'm glad to hear he's your ex lol j/k

If it's legally, I'm cool with that because they go to extra lengths to ensure safety, but not in the street where someone could get killed.

I think there was a story this year where a kid was doing the street racing, hit a car, and in a sickening twist of fate, his mother was in the car that he hit (she was killed).

Something like that happend in Lincoln Park, Michigan, but there were four cops watching and didn't do anything. Those cops were sent to court. I don't remember what happend, but I know something serious to the cops cuz a girl got killed.

It’s a dam shame when innocent people die but I seriously doubt everyone on here abides by the speed limit.

odd..... i feel the same way about frats and soroities.

you guys seriously have no clue what happens. Street racing is older than many of you and even older than your parents.

the same amount of people that have/will die to "street racing" accidents was roughly the same as last year, the year before, and before etc.

the same people that call street racers irresponsible are the same people that speed. yeah, you are still in the wrong and there is no difference between racing another car and racing against time.

grow up guys, you are college people, dont compare life to a movie.

this stems back a few years to school shootings -- do violent video games create violent kids. hell no. i played mortal kombat and i really cant remember ripping someones spine out... ive never shot anyone with a shotgun (or any gun for that matter) because i played doom.

and if you wanna talk about irresponsibility, lets talk about college parties, drinking drugs, etc.

dont point fingers if you cant take the pointing

well said chris..

well as you can all tel lfrom my signature, i have come over from a car-related board. i am not over here to be an ass to you all, i am simply showing my presence to educate those of you who may not completely understand the world of performance automobiles.

let me start off by saying chris (hovocx) is right. i am a student at UVA, i have many friends who have atteneded and ettend college.. i have to say i have seen many mroe people mess themselves up from drinking and drugs and frat/sorority kindof stuff than i have seen from streetracing.. and about 99% of my friends are car enthusiasts.. yes w erace. at a track? yes. on the street? yes, but no to crazy extents. is there streetracing in my area? yes. do i consider it a problem? no.

when i am on the road, i will sometimes play iwht people, but not in a dangerous way.. someone pulls up besides me and wants to go , i punch it for a second to show them what's up.. and that is the extent of my streetracing. i never go more than 5mph over the speed limit. my friends don't either. when we want to have a real race we go to the track. not all car enthusiasts are vin deisel wannabes, and the streetracing scene is no different now than it was 2 years ago. the people you see on the news dying from "streetracing" are jsut idiot speeders. that is all they are. organized streetracing has been around since the first car. well almost that long anyway. the only thing different is the way the 11:00 news shows it to us. i see races on a regualr basis, and have for over a year. regular basis meaning several nights a week. i have yet to see a single wreck occur.. this is becuas it is done in a controlled environment where there is no chance of other traffic r anything being involved. i agree there is no substitute for the track when it comes to safety, but if they truly want us there, there are lots of things they could do to get us there as opposed to the streets. they could build more, and be open later, etc.. i love my cars. i love working on them. i love driving them. they are my hobby. some of you say my parts should be confiscated. ok then, i'd like to see you run off with my exhaust. 16 feet of pipe is hard to carry. i'm sure all cops carry engine puller's in their glove compartment too, right? because they'll need to take that too, HKS lemans team uses that engine, don't want a race engine in here! bottom of the line, you try to take my parts, the only thing you'll get is a tire-iron embedded in your head for stupidity. my car puts down maybe 300 horsepower, and is HIGHLY modified. it still isn't as fast as a viepr or a porsche. does that mean we need to take all those off the road too? think before you speak people.

these accidents are not caused my modified cars or streetracers. they are caused by PURE STUPIDITY. only an idiot goes over 100mph on a public road, or weaves in and out of traffic, or cuts people off. my car is highly modifieed and drive very carefully and responsibly. i do not speed excessively, i do not weave in and out of traffic, i do not do burnouts at stoplights, i do not fly through intersections, or run relights, I OBEY ALL TRAFFIC LAWS. you want to stop tragic car crashes? you getthe soccermom off the road that changes lanes without a turn signal and almost runs me off the road. you get teh guy who won't let me merge off the road. you getthe guy who tailgates me off the road. you getthe guy who likes to cut people off and slams his brakes off the road. you get the people who think they can get a whole day's office work done on the way there off the road. you put your g*ddam* phone somewhere other then next to yuor head while driving. you look beofre pulling out.

class dissmissed. go home and study before event thinking of responding, you WILL lose any arguement without the proper homework.

Don't like fraternities and sororities? Okay. So stay away.

Funny how there's an influx of rice rocket boys on Greekchat tonight.

That's all...drive through now.
