gpa
Hi AKA ladies,
Can someone explain to me why the national chapter gpa requirement and local chapter requirements are different at certain schools (mine in particular)??? My circumstance is that I have the nat'l requirement, but I am off by .013 points for the school chapter? I have been racking my brains to decide whether I should even go to the interest meeting, or am I waisting my time? I know it sounds petty, but I need some *quick* advice? Thanks ladies (in advance).

Carolinablue01,
First of all, although you directed the question at members, I felt compelled to post; and I am NOT a member (but hey it's a free country, right?) To answer your question--GO. If you are truly interested in joining the organization, you should go to the interest meeting. You will not get close to getting in if you don't go. Just sounds like you need a little support.....
Second, I believe (and this is just my opinion) that certain school chapters have different (usually higher) gpa requirements than the national requirement because those chapters might be trying to win a "chapter of the year" award at regional or national conventions. (just my opinion). At my school, they told them what nationals required, then took women with really, really high gpas, and won some type of award at their convention. Or they might just be trying to raise the level of the chapter as a whole. Chapters have the right to do it, but that doesn't mean you should not go to the meeting. Prepare yourself and offer them the best 'you' that you have.
And if at first you don't succeed.........
Good luck!
and Happy Holidays everyone!
BTW, no disrespect to anyone who comes across this post, and if anyone feels disrespected by anything said, you have my apologies in advance. God Bless!

THANKS, KOCANDI, BUT, if you wanted to answer the SF as you did, you could have emailed her or ask that she email you. That way you could have given her your "advice" PRIVATELY.
CarolinaBlue...
NOT ALL CHAPTERS OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA EMPHASIZE THE SAME GPA requirements. NATIONALS set a MINIMUM requirement, BUT a chapter IS NOT required to grant membership to those who only have that MINIMUM C+ average. Nor is a chapter required to grant membership to someone who has exceeded the GPA requirment. The MINIMUM requirement is established for those who can SUBMIT, now if one makes it is another story.
I will not tell you whether to attend or not, but is your only concern your grades? Have you performed ANY community service PRIOR to this past semester? Has it been consistent? Or are you trying to "hastily" come up with some kind of activity to say "I have done this, that, or the other?"
LET ME ALSO SAY, THAT HAVING GRADES HIGHER THAN A C+ IS NOT ALL ABOUT "WINNING A CHAPTER OF THE YEAR" AWARD. ONE WOULD THINK THAT WOULD BE SOMEONE'S GOAL.
Be careful where you get your information!
Good Luck in your endeavors for the New Year!

Well-said, Soror AKA2D. Some people really need to keep their opinions to themselves. Carolinablue, good luck!

Ladies,
Thanks for replying. To answer one of the questions about service...YES!! I've known I wanted to be in this sorority since High
School, and I was told by a close source to call one of the sorors and express my interest in advance, so I sort of had a telephone interview last semester, and I am in volunteer organizations, and I have been going to their service projects since last semester...my research is a little sketchy b/c I have been afraid of this *gpa thing. But, thanks girls...I am going to go, you never know if you don't try right? Happy Holidays ladies, and once again thanks for the advice :-)

AKA2D: I was not trying to play "graduate advisor" here, I was simply giving my opinion
in answer to her 'particular' question. By no means, is my response supposed to be a supplement of information. I simply felt carolinablue could use some encouragement.
AKAtude: If I'm not mistaken, the point of this forum is to share one's opinions on topics presented. Now I understand carolinablue addressed members, but I stated that in my response.
Carolinablue: Keep your head up!
Once again ladies, I meant no disrespect in my post, and although it is common knowledge that AKA is NOT for everyone, I do like to see sisters stay encouraged in pursuit of their goals, greek or otherwise. Everyone, have a blessed Kwanzaa and a safe and prosperous New Year's!

First of all, I never thought of you as a "grad advisor". Why would I do such a thing?
If you were going to respond to Carolina, then your first point WAS MORE THAN ENOUGH information that she needed!
The second "point" could have been discussed PRIVATELY, as I stated previously.
AGAIN, I SAY, BE CAREFUL AS TO WHERE YOU GET YOUR INFORMATION, SISTERFRIENDS!
Who has NOT encouraged, Carolina et.al? You did that, you encouraged her to "GO". You did MORE than your fair share. And for that, I thank you!
I gave her the PERTINENT information and wished her well...
...And I am doing the same for you!

kocandi...,
I think the point of their responses was that this particular subject is not subjective. There is only one reason why the national gpa may be different from the schools gpa. Speculation will not get carolinablue the result that she wants/needs. For other topics, of course you are free to express your opinion, but what is the point in giving your OPINION whe what she needs are facts. Facts that can only be given by and AKA?

I see my question caused somewhat of a debate. I just wanted to say that i appreciated *everyone's* comment and I took from it what I needed, so I must thank you ladies once again. Kocandi, I see that you were trying to encourage me, but I am sure the AKA's at my school aren't doing their local requirement for purposes other than attracting women who value their academic achievement as an extension of themselves in addition to being a reflection of their future achievements elsewhere in life. AKA2D, I want to thank you for reinforcing the facts that I believe are going to be an important factor in my decision to pursue, I guess I just needed someone I didn't know personally to tell me what I have been hearing for some time, so I must give you thanks again as well. Happy New Year!
