Use of Avatars
Why are we not allowed to have Avatars?

This is a guess... but it may have something to do with the fact that a page takes a lot more time to load when avatars are used. With the traffic this board gets, it might also raise some red flags with the ISP.

An avatar is a small picture that kinda "represents" a user. It appears with their post and can generally be any picture of their choosing.
Go here for an example of avatars on another board I frequent. Just click on any one of the topics. The avatar is the picture appearing under another poster's name.
I agree avatars would be nice, but I prefer my GreekChat working and fairly ad free. If that's the only trade off I have to make, I'm not complaining.
And no offense, but sig pictures drive me crazy. I can hardly find the post for all the garbage.

John is a smart man, he knows that avators and a message board like this doesn't mix, lol. People would definately abuse the privledge.
Why am I sounding like a moderator?
Scary!

Understandable....but why not just ban the use of bad Avatars such as porn and allow decent ones? If not Avatars, I'm all for sig pics.

but then wouldn't it take a lot longer for pages to load? especially for people that dial in to the internet and don't use high speed access?

Depends. If you restrict the avatars to a certain file type (JPG or GIF), a maximum height/width ratio (most avatars are seldom larger than 100 x 100 pixels), then it shouldn't be much of a problem.
As for avatar selection, I think this BB system can be customized to restrict the type of avatars to a specific list already on the server; any new avatars would have to be approved by the administrator and added to the list. You can also restrict the use of avatars to certain posting levels or to moderators/admins.
I would not be adverse to a simple avatar displaying the Greek letters of one's GLO affiliation or their coat of arms/badge.

Like AlphaSigOU said, on many BB (not sure about this particular program) you can restrict the avatars people can use. For example, on the official Smashing Pumpkins board (where I used to post, haven't been there in ages) you could choose from about 8 avatars from different periods in the Pumpkins' careers, nothing else. I think that that would be much better for GC.
Sig pics would just get out of control. I don't think they're that cool anyway.

I think sig pics would definitely get OOC on this board...since there are still some sigs that take up my whooole monitor.
