CNN screws up again...

I have lived in NYC for a good deal of my life, and it infuriates me that CNN failed to cover the tragic staten island ferry disaster... They always pride themselves for being "the most trusted name in news", yet they cover Kobe instead of a REAL news story... Pathetic. Thanks to Fox and MSNBC for covering the story, and my prayers to all of the families involved.

I've also noticed when big things happen, that fox will break the story usually a few minutes before cnn does.......CNN used to be excellent......but as of the past few years their quality has really begun to slide i think.

I think the main problem with CNN is that they got away from what they did best (Reporting the liberal bias) to trying to compete with Fox News and having more 'entertaining' shows...it just doesn't work on that channel

Last night I was in my car the the radio DJ reported that he read off of CNN that the captain of the boat killed himself.

Then this morning the radio says ATTEMPTED. Huge difference.

Strange you say that, b/c I first saw footage from the accident while channel surfing on CNN. It must have been about 4pm Central Daylight, as I went to watch Around the Horn on ESPN. I think that's the time that Wolf Blitzer (best name ever) has his show, and he was showing footage of it all.

I was doing some surfing as well, and it was afternoon, not sure what time. All I know was that I watched the story on Fox for a while, switching to see Kobe for a while-getting mad-and switching back to Fox. I think that it is wierd. Why would they not report on it until so much later? You know they have people watching FOX and MSNBC for them to make sure they do not miss anything... I don't like it.

I agree w/ Thetaprincess though, they used to be alright, and I still click over there, but they have really been pissing me off lately w/ their horrible channel.

Sorry to rant...

I think the real problem is huge budget cuts by AOL/Time Warner after buying CNN, etc.

They also hire a lot of people straight out of college with little or no experience. The important part there, being the experience. No matter how good your TCOM or J-School is, nothing prepares you for this kind of situation like experience.

As far as the "reporting the liberal bias" goes, they have not wandered too far from their roots.

I heard the CNN based suicide report on the radio too, but anyone can make a mistake. I read the same thing on a net based news source.

I'm not sure what liberal or conservative have to do with reporting a fatal accident. I kind of wish we didn't politicize so much in this forum.

It is a sad truth that more and more media are using, and assuming to be fact, reports from other media without checking out the story themselves. It is, unfortunately, a symptom of "getting it on first" in our highly competitive, highly stressed electronic journalistic climate. It is also a symptom of those young journalists I mentioned above. Twenty years ago, nobody would have taken anything aired by another station, or even appearing in a newspaper as truth without checking it out themselves -- even if they attribute the story to the other media. Even if it took those precious extra minutes.

Actually I watched CNN for quite a while yesterday when it happened, and they were switching back and forth from Kobe and the accident.

It's known for being kind of a news sweat shop.

Crappy pay, long hours but great experience. A glorified internship.

Also, DA, you can't discount the producers on the national station. I mean it's about 90% their fault in this particular matter.

Unless someone's worked in or around a news program, they'd have no idea about the sheer volume of material that CNN produces. I'm talking about TONS of sports, news, whatever packages, video, whatever.

Just to give ya'll an idea about how much CNN actually produces, we're probably in the neighborhood of 8-10 hours per day worth of fresh edited or unedited, voiced or unvoiced video. Many local news stations rely on CNN to provide all the material they need for regional, nationwide and worldwide news. For someone to effectively oversee what reporters are putting on that feed from day to day would be a pretty daunting task.

When producing a news program, it's really amazing how many stories CNN puts out that will never see the light of day due to the sheer volume of stuff. We really can't talk about CNN and its reporters faults without acknowledging that the producers at the local/national level should at least share some fault here.
