Talking I am blessed

I was just reflecting on my long journey through college and how I have matured within the last three years. I am very pleased with myself, but I feel that there is always room for growing and improvement and that comes from experience, interacting with others and making mistakes. I thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to grow and to find my own self and for giving me guidance from the "old school." I know that I am blessed to have parents who care and made sacrifices for me. I am proud to say that I am the first lady to graduate from college in my family. I wish my grandparents were here to see me, they had to quit school in order to help their families. My grandmother didn't go past the 8th grade and my grandfather didn't go past the 6th grade. So I dedicate my degree to them and all of my ancestors who did not get the chance to accomplish their dreams. They worked hard so that I may have the chance to succeed. Did you know that only 22% of Americans graduate from college? We are part of a new "generation" so to speak. Just something to think about.

Yes you are blessed Talaxe, and so am I. I totally understand where you're coming from, especially about being the first to graduate, and wishing your grandparents could be there to see it.

I will be the first one to do anything in my family, and it's been a hard road because people didn't understand the things I had to do as a college student. Now that my mom (who's 50) is in college (im sooooo proud of her), she is starting to see what I was talking about all those times I said I had to study.

My grandparents died when my mother was a little girl. They were from a small town in Georgia (which still only has a population of about 1000), and I know they never thought thier children would be doctors and engineers or things of that nature. I've always wondered what they would think if they could see their offspring now.

Again, congradulations on graduation

I know you are extremely proud of your mom. I'm proud of her too! You made her jealous! LOL

Thanks for the reply. We are truly blessed!

Just curious, but what part of GA is your family from?

I understand what you ladies mean...It took my mother 8 years to finish her undergraduate degree because she would run out of money, go back home and work, run out of $$, go back home and work, etc. Through it all though, she never gave up. She was also the first in her family to graduate from college. She later went on to get a masters degree as well. She made sure that my sister and I never had to worry about a thing and had four years of paid college. She told us "If you can get in, I'll make sure you stay in." When I think about how much she sacrificed for me.....Whew! Twelve years after my college graduation I still get teary eyed.

I understand where you all are coming from. My mother just graduated this May at the age of 46. I was moved to tears at her graduation because I know what a struggle it was for her, working full time, raising 2 daughters by herself and going to school part time. I pray that my grandmothers will still be here when I graduate. Congratulations Talaze!

They were from LaGrange, GA. Close to the Alabama boarder.

B.T.W. I thought I was the only one up in here who's mom started college in her late 40's. My mom had an exam this morning and I just cant wait to call her to find out how she did.
