Reason for joining/Favorite Sister/Brother

Hello everyone! I'm new to the board!

I am going to be attending school in the fall and I am looking forward to recruitment!

My three older sisters are in sororities (all different ones) and I have grown up with the absolute desire to join!

I have been reading the boards for months and I can not wait until fall!!

I have a question for everyone: Was there a specific person in your chapter who was the main influence for you to join? Who was he/she and why?

I didn't know a single person in my chapter when I joined. I joined based on what the sorority stood for and their beliefs.

My sister ended up joining my sorority the year after I rushed. Turns out, she liked the same stuff that I did about the sorority.

My big, Jon was the reason I joined. He was a good guy, the ladies loved him, and the real life big brother I never had. He rushed me. I knew little about the organization or its ideals. I lucked out and hit the Jackpot with Lambda Chi. Greek life is amazing. Its changed my life so for the better. Made me be a part of something much larger than myself. Introduced me to hundreds, if not thousands of people I might never had met. Forced me to look deep inside to see what my ideals were. Challenged me to greater things. Allowed me to be a role model. Destroy stereotypes. Embrace diversity. It allowed me to make a difference... in the lives of people I knew and loved and through our philanthropies, in the lives of people I never met.

I am a charter member of my chapter, so my story is a little different. Our chapter consultant is really the reason why I am a Kappa. She spent months sitting out in front of our student union talking to women about Kappa and urging them to come to the interest group events. Kylie's friendliness got meinterested, and her honestly and sincerity got me hooked. She spent hours talking to me about Kappa and her personal experiences. I late found out that she took the time to do this with almost every single potential new member! Talk about dedication! I have never met anyone so dedicated and sincerely interested in others. When you ask our charter class why they chose to be Kappas, the almost unanimous response is, "Kylie!"

Honestly, I wanted something that would look good in my resumé. That was my main reason. I also found the promise of no hazing and being able to build something from the ground-up to be appealing. I was a founding member of my chapter. I was chosen (mostly by default) to be the new member educator after my first semester in the colony. It all went downhill (or uphill depending on the way you look at it) from there. I held exec positions from there on out until my senior year when I settled for alum relations.

Now I'm an active alumnus -- recorder for our alumni chapter. I edit the newsletter, publish and mail it. I also maintain the all-powerful alum directory as well as other miscellaneous stuff. I'll be attending my first national convention (as an alum) in July.

My expectations going into it were pretty low. But once I was in, I realized what a great thing it was. Probably the most important aspect of being Greek is being able to tolerate and work with others. If you have it, you'll do fine. If not, be prepared to be at the center of drama.

My sorority big sister influenced me to join. I met her the summer before I went to college through my then boyfriend's older brother (he was dating her). We all went to dinner one night and she talked about why I should rush and why I should really consider her sorority. During recruitment, everytime I was in the ZTA house, she made sure to come over to me and say hello or ask how my day was going. She was friendly and made me feel welcome. When it came time to choose our bigs, she was #1 on my list.

My boyfriend at the time had just signed with his SigEp chapter (at the end of his fourth year of school!) and after going to a few of their events, I started thinking about it. I also really wanted some female friends because at the time all my friends were male and were also CS majors, as was my boyfriend - I wanted to hang out with girls and talk about something besides computers! My neighbor in the dorms was pledging Gamma Phi that semester, and two other girls on our wing were pledging two different locals. I watched the way the girls were treated - Cassie came home with presents and was always excited about stuff to go to, and the other girls came home, in, shall we say, a less than ladylike condition, and were woken up randomly to go to pledging activities. I was still thinking about pledging one of the locals because at the time they all seemed to be dating SigEps so I thought it'd be easier to get a bid (yeah I don't know ), but then when I was back at school Cassie was one of the first to move into the dorms after me, with her big ol' Gamma Phi sticker on her truck. After she pretty much tackled me, I decided I would rather join a house with somebody I already knew who seemed to enjoy their new member period. I've never regretted my decision, Gamma Phi really was the only house for me on that campus.

The reason I first became interested in joining was to meet people. I had transferred to my campus spring of my freshman year so I knew hardly anyone because I missed all of the orientation stuff. I knew a handful of girls on my floor and had a long-distance boyfriend and I was sick of sitting in my room.

There was a girl on my floor that was an ASA. So before I called the house about the interest party I went and talked to her. She was so enthusiastic about it that I knew I just had to check it out. She ended up being my god-mom.

Another girl came to pick me up and take me to the house. I got in the car and she and I just instantly clicked. She ended up being my big sis and told me one time that the minute I started talking to her she knew I was meant to be an ASA.

Hi cassie612! I'm so excited to hear your enthusiasm about joining a GLO.
I went through rush my freshman year but dropped out because I didn't feel like I fit into one specific chapter and I didn't know if I was ready to make the commitment. I met a girl named Melody through a class and we studied a lot together. I also met another girl, we'll call her Jane, in another class who talked up Chi O a lot to me and she was the reason I decided to go through rush again. Well, I found out about a day before rush started that Jane had dropped Chi O and I was crushed because she was the one who had told me how great it was. On preference night I was still unsure about where I wanted to go, especially since I had gotten that news. Melody and I were talking at pref and I decided to ask her flat out why Jane had dropped. She told me that she didn't really know (I'm sure she did, but that's not something you discuss with a PNM) and then proceeded to tell me how much she wanted me to be a part of her chapter and be one of her sisters. I could tell that she was sincere and I knew right then what my choice would be.

My freshman year I was playing soccer and the majority of the team were KBG's. It was because of these girls that I even got interested in joining. I was the shy homesick freshman and they all made me feel welcome and gave me pointers on the school and all of that. These people became some of my closest sisters and I think it because I knew them outside of the sorority before I knew them inside it.

There wasn't really a specific person. I've always thought that the Tri- Sigma's were the friendliest girls on campus, so I decided to check them out. The first COB I went to, almost the entire chapter was there. I found out that there wasn't ONE girl that I didn't click with. It just felt right. I guess you could say I was influenced by the whole chapter.

Yay!! Kylee is one of my pledge sisters and an absolute asset to Kappa. I'm so happy to hear she had such a great influence on you all.

My older sister was a Kappa and I had always looked up to her. I knew she wouldn't be a part of something if she didn't really believe in what it stood for. I went through recruitment with an open mind but I always felt most at home with the Kappas.

I actually went into recruitment hoping I'd be a member of a different organization....while I got along great with everyone pretty well in that GLO, I really hit it off with the woman who first greeted me the first day of recruitment in ADPi (her name was Jamie). Once we started talking, we never ran out of things to say....and the great thing was she was also from California, which was great to talk about being so far from home. Throughout the week, I talk to Jamie a couple of other times, and then she wound up preffing me on the last night. When talking with her, I started crying, and knew that I had found the connection I was looking for in a sorority. Jamie didn't wind up as my diamond sister, but she was the first sister that I really bonded with and the one who got me to consider ADPi very seriously as the sisterhood for me!

I joined the second semester of my freshman year. My friend Cheryl, went through Formal Recruitment in the fall and told me about it and the two sororities. She told me what a sorority was really like and what Alpha Phi stood for. She invited me to events and introduced me to a lot of the sisters. Without her, I probably would not be where I am today. I love Alpha Phi so much and don't know where I would be without it. Good luck with recruitment this fall!!!!

I had always been interested in joining a fraternity because I was born here and had always been around greek life...

The person who really influenced me to sign AKL was my friend Ryan... He is a year older than me and went to high school with me... Delta Gamma had their anchor splash at the pool I worked at, and I ran into Ryan there... He invited me to lots of rush events and truly showed me a good time...

I also checked out a lot of other fraternities on campus, but this one seemed to be a great match... Awesome guys, Ryan, great reputation, awesome at sports, great house and location... Plus it was fairly new on campus (1992) so that meant there was room for even more improvement...

So yup, thats why I decided to sign.

I'll also be starting school in the fall like you.

-Matt
