Hurricane Isbel

Hurricane Isbel is bearing down on the United States, in particular, the Carolinas. The last hurricane of this strength was Hurricane Hugo. Isbel is predicted to hit Thursday or Friday but predicitions that far in advance are usually incorrect so it could come in sooner or later.

As in Hugo, Isbel is supposed to come in as far as Charlotte, NC and Rock Hill, SC (which is only 20 minutes away from Charlotte). The eye of Hugo was over Lake Wylie, which is in the same county as Rock Hill.

Please pray for everyone, not just ZTAs, in the Carolinas. We have two chapters near the coast at the College of Charleston and USC-Aiken. Those two chapters will be the first ones to experience the effects of Hurricane Isbel.

Isbel is 1 mile under the minimum mileage for a Class 5 hurricane.

Unhappy

As a native east coast Floridian, I know all about how devastating a small hurricane can be, let alone a level 5. I'm praying that it turns back to the ocean and doesn't hit land at all...my thoughts are with you. I'll be watching the news!

I have relatives in Florida (Orlando and Winter Garden) and they've had to come up here during a hurricane.

All of the Carolinians appreciate your concern and prayers!

I'm originally from Mt. Dora, which is about an hour north of Orlando, in Lake County! My friends and I used to go to Orlando like every weekend.

I grew up in South Florida and I was in Ft. Lauderdale when Hurricane Andrew hit back in 1992. That was scary. We had no power for a week and any tree that was on our lawn was uprooted. There were houses in our neighborhood that were missing walls. The storm had directly hit Miami (an hour south of Ft. Lauderdale). My grandmother, who lived in Homestead at the time, came and stayed with us during the Hurricane (Homestead is a suburb of Miami and was the hardest hit by Andrew). We're grateful she did that. My dad went to her house a few days after the hurricane. Homestead was declared a disaster area by Bush the First. My grandmother's house was completely torn apart....all that was left was the concrete floor. There were no structured buildings left standing in Homestead. Absolutely devastating hurricane. There are some houses in Miami that still have not been repaired since. A friend of the family stayed in Homestead during the hurricane. Their house had been blown apart by a tornado that ripped through during the storm. When the eye passed over, they ran to a neighbors house to seek shelter. Scary.

So, from someone who has been through one of the worst hurricanes in American history, you are all in my thoughts. I hope everyone is prepared with lots of water, batteries, flashlights, etc.

Actually it looks like South Carolina is going to be spared the brunt of Hurricane Isabelle. As of 11 pm on Monday night, they are predicting that she is going to be coming ashore on the Outer Banks, NC around 2 pm Thursday.

I know that several of my sisters at Old Dominion Unviersity (Iota Sigma) ~ Norfolk, VA, are making plans to head home. They are making plans to send the Navy ships out to sea (since they can do significant damage to themselves and the piers) and jets inland. There have been no plans to close ODU, but it is still early. Evacuation of the Outer Banks has started, and they may evacuate Virginia Beach also.

I will let you know how we are doing up here. I have grown up in Virginia Beach, and have had pretty good luck so far with Mother Nature. Thanks for your concern. My prayers go out to the other Zetas in Hurricane Isabelle's path...I am still hoping she decides that land is not where the party is at!!!

ZLAM,
Meredith

Sorry to crash, but I saw the thread title! Our bid day is Friday and it looks like Lady Isabel thinks she is invited to Preference on Thursday night! I'm in Raleigh, NC.

Greek Life asked all the chapters today if it would be a problem to move up Preference one night (to tomorrow night)...once half of the chapters agree that will be done in an attempt to get the bids out before it hits...but it looks like it's coming straight for us!

Well, I talked to Meredith at ODU and she's okay, but bored out of her mind without electricity. She was cleaning her apt when she called me. We're okay here in Northern Va, so I just thought I'd check in!

Hello all!!! As you can probably guess, I HAVE ELECTRICITY FINALLY!!!!

I survived okay...But other parts of Hampton Roads got hit really bad. I am sure many of you have seen on the National News pictures of the area. I have only talked to a few of the Iota Sigma sisters. Most of us are without power. I am waiting to talk to the new Alpha Kappa Bunnies, since many of them live where the storm hit the hardest. I will let you know more when I can. No news yet about if ODU will be open on Monday.

All I know is I took the coldest shower in the WORLD last night!!! YIKES!

ZLAM,
Meredith

Power is back!!

Hello all! Dominion Power finally came through and restored my power this morning. I took the longest and HOTTEST shower of my life! Now I am washing my five loads of laundry, and cleaning up the apartment. Who knew how dirty an apartment could get when you don't vacuum for a week!!!

Winston the bulldog is recovering from his eye surgery, although he hates his cone! I hope everyone else is recovering from the Hurricane. Now...to make up the schoolwork....
