another letter to the editor - U. MD
Hoosier sends another letter to the editor, Univ. of MD chapter:
To the editor:
It's a true and terrible double standard
Sigma Phi Epsilon at Maryland has reorganized and come back to campus this fall, after being suspended for over four years for hazing and alcohol problems. These are called, in the 21st century, risk management situations.
Pi Kappa Phi at Maryland has been suspended by it's national organization for similar risk management problems.
This fall we also learn that the men's and women's lacrosse teams have been hazing their rookies, and abusing alcohol.
Just as fraternities cannot exist on campus if they haze freshmen and abuse alcohol, neither should any sports teams. Both lacrosse teams, if the accusations are true, should immediately be suspended. The Athletic Assn., and the coaches, should not be allowed to sweep this under the covers.
In the fall of 1999, the University of Vermont uncovered a hazing case in their powerhouse ice hockey team. When the details were confirmed, University president Judith Ramaley terminated the team’s season in January.
The Universdity of Maryland should consider the same decisive action.
It's a true and terrible double standard if fraternities die for hazing and alcohol abuse, and our jocks get a slap on the wrist.

I don't consider patronizing to be bad.
I don't consider patronizing to be bad. (Although I don't know exactly what it means). My little desk-side dict. defines patronizing as condescending, and it describes condescending as patronizing.
Incidently, my prev. letter to the Michigan State paper got printed.
I never heard anything from my letters to U Nebraska.

It's an excellent letter and I hope it gets printed. However, since this is Maryland and LAX players enjoy the godlike status footballplayers in most other states enjoy, things probably won't change. Very, very sad

Lacrosse Hazing I've sent this letter to the editors of several area newspapers, and I hope to hear from you.
If the lacrosse hazing is verified as true, the University needs to keep the athletic dept. from covering it up. If the women's team had a hazing/alcohol problem in 2001 too, strong action is required.

A classic non-answer. But at least he replied.

We get a call
The opinion editor of the U MD student newspaper called, and wanted to know who I was.
He said they don't print letters except from on-campus people, so I don't think they'll print it.
And today I read that the soccer team at Harvard has no hazing. But for the first week, the rookies had to wear jock straps over their clothes to all meals. I wonder what would happen if XYZ GLO made their pledges wear jocks in public?

Maryland Suspends Athletes In Hazing Incident
University of Maryland Suspends Athletes In Hazing Incident
Sep 16, 2003 6:56 am US/Eastern
Athletes on the men's and women's lacrosse teams at the University of Maryland are facing some stiff penalties after an investigation into alleged hazing and under age drinking. The Athletic Department has decided to suspend some players for the entire fall season, while others will have to sit out for half of fall play. Still other students will not be allowed to attend a planned lacrosse trip in the spring. University representatives say the number of students on suspension will make participating in fall games difficult.
The punishments are a result of an investigation into under age drinking. Evidence of hazing, which is an extremely serious offense, will be turned over to the campus Office of Judicial Affairs.

It would be nice to think that your letter had something to do with this, Hoosier.
Some athletes will be PO'd, but it nice to see some fairness.
Congratulations.

I think it's fair punishment for hazing. They obviously aren't going to abolish a whole team for this, but they are dealing with the perpetrators of the matter, and that's important. Well done hoosier

Hoosier, I am not sure if that letter was printed, but I am sure it got through to University officials . Double standards suck big time!
