Question for Sorors and Astute Sisterfriends
I was just refreshing myself on my history, and thought of a question for Sorors and Sisterfriends:
SORORS: We all know that we share the sorority ideals, but which founder(s) do you think your personality is/are most like? Why?
SISTERFRIENDS: Which founder(s) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority do you find most appealing and why?
*this is public info that any sisterfriend could find*
I think that I am most like Lillie Burke because she was an English major and English teacher, and Marie Woolfolk Taylor because she is described as being slim, elegant and stylish.
What about you all?

I think that I am more like:
Soror Anna E. Brown, she had the reputation of being SOLID, RELIABLE, GENTLE, AND SWEET...
I am the same way...though I may SEEM HARSH (at times), etc...When one gets to KNOW ME..I am as GENTLE AS A LAMB! LOL
Whenever ANYONE, needs me...I AM THERE, SOROR OR ANYONE IN NEED! BUT...
ALSO...
SOROR BEULAH E. BURKE....SHE WAS DESCRIBED AS...VERY GENEROUS IN HER CONTRIBUTION OF TIME AND WISE COUNSEL...
That just goes along with what I said earlier...
Soror, isn't this book better than the one before?
I think so!

I find Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporator Julia Brooks and Founder Marie Woolfolk Taylor and to be the most appealing. I find them both to be women of high standard and dedication to their personal and civic goals.
Ms. Brooks began to persue her career goal early by attending an teaching preparatory school, and continuing her education at Howard and Columbia Universities. She achieved and ensured that her success would be paralled by succeeding generations by her mentoring and financial support to her family members. She was active in her sorority and other civic organizations. In everything, she demonstrated civic excellence and consistency.
Marie Woolfolk Taylor was truly an outstanding woman. Beyond her diverse educational and vocational background, I would imagine that she was very studious and intentful. In her studies, she was a Magna cum Laude graduate with honors outside of her major, which is an accomplishment indeed. She then went on to continue her education at the Schauffler Training School where she specilized in religion. She went on to work at her church home in Atlanta as a community assistant. She was also a probation officer, night school instructor, and Insurance Inspection Dept. Supervisor. In the community, she volunteered with the Red Cross, and was a board member and chairlady of various community and civic organizations. She was also very instrumental in chartering chapters of her sorority, and was the chapter basileus. Her experience and credentials were exhaustive. In addition, she lead her daughter to follow in her tradition of persuing excellence. Truly, Ms. Taylor's life was predicated on a pursuit of the higher good of mankind. I respect what she saught to do in her life, and believe that she presents women today with an example of what it means to have a fine balance on one's life.
I find both women to be appealing because of their understanding of a higher calling upon their lives, and their diligence and excellence in fulfilling the mandates of the call.

As I read the history of this organization, I marveled at how all of the founders worked and had a genuine love not just for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, but also for the general community.
However, the one lady that really stood out to me was Miss Nellie Quander. Her committment and determination in ensuring that her organization would become established throughout the nation is to be emulated. It really gave me (as a Women's Studies major)a sense of pride in the accomplishments that the ladies of this organization have achieved. It also renewed my passion to one day become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Convinced, this is one of the most interesting questions I've seen on this forum.
I tend to be proud of the fact that my home state and neighborhood high school produced one of your founders Anna E. Brown. And I admired her interest in African American history; as that was a very important part of my upbringing.
I also appreciate the work of both Lucy D. Slowe and Marie Woolfolk Taylor with young women. Especially Mrs. Taylor's work with the 'delinquent' girls of Atlanta. There are several reasons why this piece of history is admirable to me, personally, but I won't go into details in this post. And both women went on to accomplish so much in their respective areas; they are truly inspirational to me.
Again, thanks for the interesting and thought-provoking topic....and a safe New Year's to all!
Peace and bless
Kocandi

Well I like Ethel Hedgmeman Lyle because she initiated the interest of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
I admire her determination and inspiration towards the most respected sorority.

I think my personality is most like that of Soror Marjorie Hill. She is described as being small and sweet-voiced...and was always willing to help when a job had to be done. Those that know me will agree that I am rather soft-spoken, but when a job needs to be done, I'm always ready to get down to business.

I posed this question in a forum that I am co-founder of and for the longest time I wasn't sure of my answer. Each of the founders have qualities that are similar to my own but I think Lucy Diggs Slowe is the founder that is most appealing to me. She and I have similar paths in that I am a working student as was she. I also appreciate her versatility and interest in different activities inside and outside of college. What stands out the most for me is that she was known for her enthusiasm and activism for her sorority. I know that organizations that I have been a part of being enthusiastic and active are qualities that are EXTREMELY important to me. It shows that you fully understand the history and positive impact of said organization.

All I can say ig thank God for Nellie Quander!
I feel that my dedication an love for AKA are similar. Just as I feel that she thought vows should be taken seriously, I too think that vows to anything including AKA should be considered a serious matter!

I admire Ms. Nellie M. Quander the most because of her strong will, pride for her organization, perseverance and dedication . In my quest for knowledge concerning Alpha Kappa Alpha I learned about Ms. Nellie M. Quander and her work with the incorporation and preservation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and I find her the most interesting. It is because of Ms. Nellie M. Quander's strong legacy that I have pursued AKA even harder.

Lucy Diggs Slowe. I really admire her commitment to children and education. She seems like such an dignified and gracious woman. Especially realizing the challenges that all women faced in that time simply to be educated. Founder Slowe perservered and made great contributions to the education of children in my hometown. She was efficient and organized, always poised to get the job done. If I could embody some of those characteristics I'd be doing well.

I like this thread!
I think that if I had to choose only one of our illustrious founders, I would have to choose Soror Margaret Flagg Holmes. She was known to make friends easily, and I, too, have been labeled a social butterfly by some. I love to meet new people and make new friends. She also loved to travel, and that is a passion of mine, as well, I just don't have the financial means to do it!!

I love the style of Nellie Quander. Bold, and determined, fiesty and sassy. Hey, you gotta love her.
