Question recognized by your Greek Life office?

Hi. I'm the Vice President of a three-year-old local sorority, Mu Phi Gamma, at Washington University in St. Louis. We are trying to seek recognition on our campus, as we are the only local on campus, and we've tried talking to our Greek Life office, and they claim that because we are not a member of Panhel or IFC, we shouldn't be talking to them.

My question for you all is this. On your campuses, are you recognized during Greek Week and other such specifically Greek events?

If so, how did you get that recognition and what would you recommend for us? If not, if you have any ideas as to what we could do, please tell me!

Thank you!!

We are recognized by Greek Life - we're an associate member of Panhellenic, which is cool because we get to vote, we are a part of activities that they have, etc. I would encourage you to look into joining. It makes things easier as far as recognition on campus and activities with other orgs.

What do you mean by "associate" member of Panhel?

Part of the reason we were formed was that we wanted something different than what Panhel had to offer...

My local sorority was also an associate member of our campus Panhellenic. This meant (IIRC) that: we had a vote on most issues; we sent a delegate to Panhel meetings; we weren't part of the officer rotation (high offices like president, secretary, treasurer, etc. rotate among the sororities), but our members could hold non-rotation offices; and, after a waiting period, we could participate in formal recruitment alongside the nationals. The exact privileges granted to associate members varies depending on the school.

If your school's Greek Life office says you have to be recognized by Panhel to be recognized by the office, then I suggest you look into associate membership. You'll still have a lot of the freedom you're looking for, to do things your own way; for instance, Panhel may invite you to particiate in formal rush, but you don't have to accept.

My sorority was the first to be brought to my school so we're definitely recognized by the school. We don't have a Panhel here, we just have a Greek Council and we get the same number of representatives as any other GLO on campus.

OMG, Washington U , St. Loo!

Are very tight Greeks there as I remember!

Polotics be Big/, Right! Also have more there than I remember back when.

Many times, as a Local, you are a Threat to the Greeks stablished on campus. Depending on the size of school and the # of Greeks makes a big difference. I commend you for being ther so damn long, 3 years as a local is a lot!!!!!!!!!

If you are refering to The School Greek Advisor, damn, how short sighted can this person be? DA!

If you have been there that long, how do you get along with the other Greeks? If good, then hold your head up and go for it! If The Current Greeks allow you to participate, you have come of age.

Try the Associate/Junior membership and see what happens!

I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulty trying to seek recognition on your campus. I can't believe that your Greek Life Office won't even talk to you unless you are an NPC, NPHC or IFC. That sucks! Hey a GLO is a GLO regardless of it being a local, a regional or a national.

At my alma mater, all GLOs regardless being locals, regionals or nationals, are given full recognition by the Greek Life Office and the University.

Alpha Gamma Gamma is recognized by the USC Greek Office as associate members of Panhellenic and are involved in most of the same all-greek activities as the Panhellenic sororities!!!!

My sorority is service, so we don't report to Greek Life or are allowed to participate in any of their activities, unless invited to. We report to Community Service-Learning.

However we may be joining our MGC (multi-cultural greek council) pretty soon!

Our greek life office is very supportive, though the national sororities are not.
