Sorority Life Minus the house....

Just curious, if anyone else here is from a chapter that didn't have a house or any other official common living space, such as a residence hall?

What are your thoughts?
How do you think it impacted your chapter and the relationships with your sisters?
How was the chapter regarded by others on your campus?
Those with a house, what are your thoughts?

Just curious...

I personally come from a very small chapter that didn't have a house or any other official commom living space. A couple of girls were roomates, another few had an apt together, others were at home with their parents. we all lived apart for the most part.

It was tough, not seeing each other regularly and having sisters close by. I really wish there had been a house and maybe there will be soon.

I personally think it was directly related to our numbers because other chapters on campus had huge wonderful houses.

We didn't have a house either, but we did have a corridor in the sorority dorm (where all chapters had their CR's). More often than not, our sisters chose to live elsewhere (we had difficulty filling our corridor at times) and I think our sisterhood still managed to be pretty close. You still have the stresses between some sisters, but we were able to work through them and grow closer as we went through the difficult times. We were the smallest chapter on campus (still are), but we were supported by all the other sororities on campus, and many of us had a number of friends in other chapters.

Eta beta doesnt have a house either. All sororites had a suite (living room + "kitchen") on the top floor of the all womens dorm and thats where we held our chapter events. I actually never minded that we didnt have a house I'm sure there would have been specific house related dramas that would have happened but at the same time there were times I felt that I was missing out on a part of greek life. Regardless we have a very strong sisterhood and were never short of places to hang out since many upperclassmen sisters get houses and apartments with other sisters.

At NAU all the chapters have space in the all greek res hall...which includes a chapter room and a set of rooms...Our chapter at times has had problems filling the space...If we dont fill it we lose it...Which on our campus is the end of a chapter...If you do not have a wing in Mt View (the res hall)...your chapter will die...It is sad, but on this campus it is true...So I have found so much of our time we have had to work to find sisters to fill the space more then we have gotten to do other activities...

Just this year, August 6, 2003, USF opened up houses on canpus for 14 greek organizations. Before the houses though sororities had "chapter" apartments. We had a 3 bedroom Townhouse that housed 5 officers. The president had her own room and the 4 other officers bunked up in the two other rooms. It was hard b/c we still couldn't do alpha inductions or initiation there b/c of the small space. Sisterhood activitites were limited to movie nights, since the townhouse had hollow walls......our neighbors would get irritated by the loud noise.
-Now with a house built by USF that houses 28 girls it's an amazing sense of togetherness among all greeks. The Greek Park is awesome, and sisters in between classes can stop in, watch tv, and just hang out together. I am so jealous that they have a house finally. I would have LOVED to live there, but I just graduated this May.
