I only want to add some words of advice. You must first seek the kingdom of heaven and all other things will be added. I remember when I left my rush program. I was scared and so intimidated by the level of power and air of elegance that the ladies of my chapter held, that I knew I did not have a chance. But then I remembered that I had had a conversation with God and I asked him to place the final vote. If AKA was for me, at this time, than HE would give me AKA and if she was not, than He would not. I was overjoyed when I was accepted but I know that this is my place. If you get rejected and you know that AKA is really in your heart. Be patient. Maybe God is not ready for you to go to that place in your life.

Thanks Sorors for your uplifting voices to those who may have been denied that opportunity...
You know, it is difficult to deny membership to those on the west coast with the exception of LA and the Bay area. The number of African American women--or atleast those women that want to be a part of what we do in the Sorority is very small compared to HBCU's and large east coast schools.
I attended a HBCU and at my rush there were at least 300 attendees! Now I last heard there are more. Out here because the process is the way it is--and let's not elaborate about it--we're lucky if we get 10 to show up!!! And you know how much that can make me angry!
It's only one of 2 things. The chapter didn't get the word out like they should have or the schools are soooo large and pool of interests are low because of Prop 209 that girls ain't seeing what they would want to see or ask you'd think and really they are not "trippin'" the Sorority!

AKA_Monet, I am a little confused. Do you mean to say that attendance at rush on the west coast is so low that the women in charge are forced to invite anyone who meets the basic requirements?
I attend a big ten school in the midwest and my best friend attended rush, far exceeded the requirements, but was turned down with no explanation as to why. Can you shed some light on the whole issue of rush and rejection (or acceptance)?

Teresa,
What do you mean by "far exceeded the requirements"? Do you know that for a fact? Because she may have met the requirements that everyone knows of doesn't mean she exceeded the others that are unknown or met them at all. There are numerous reasons why she could have been rejected even if she thinks she was well qualified.

Okay, what I mean by 'far exceeds' is that my best friend (whom I have known since we were 6) has a 3.42 G.P.A. and she is a Chemistry major. She volunteers at least six hours a week with a local battered women's shelter (her mother was a battered woman), she is in the army reserve and is the friendlist person you would ever want to meet. I hate to say it, but I think she didn't make it because none of the young women running the rush 'knew her'. That is to say, she doesn't go to the parties or kiss up. She went to almost all of the events that year in an effort to try to get to know some of these women, but no one would give her the time of day. I think that these young ladies were picking their friends and not over-qualified women like my girl.

ABSOLUTELY AND UNDENIABLY IN NO WAY AM I SAYING RANDOM ATTENDANCE OCCURS AT OUR RUSHES!!! On the west coast, there are so few women of color that would even understand our precious letters thatprobably meet the basic requirements... And interests should be walking into rush KNOWING at least the exact name of our COLORS!!!
RUSH is not the time to learn about the Sorority. RUSH is not the time to begin to meet the Sorority members. Rush is the time where you embark on one of the most memorable, life-changing and exciting times of your life--NEVER coming in and asking a chapter president her name!!!

Actually, "knowing" someone is important when selecting members. If they did select their friends, maybe they were just as qualified or more so than your friend. Since I don't know your friend and you may be biased in her favor (which I would be, too) it is possible that she simply did not meet certain standards that are in place. When she went to these events, did she try to make conversation with my sorors or ask questions not related to AKA, but to the event she was attending? There are so many things she probably could have done or done differently that could have made a difference. However, I hope she doesn't give up on her dream. I wish her luck. Feel free to e-mail if you would like to.

Or better yet Soror AKAtude...maybe, she should have her friend to email you! That "friend" would know better about her situation, don't you think?

Soror AKAtude:
I'm not sure why you deleted the posts in question, but then responded to the sisterfriend's post. Please let me know why her post, as well as the responses from AKA2D and myself were deleted. Thanks.

Soror Discogoddess,
I deleted the posts by SearchNSistah because they were out of line. I take it you did not get a chance to read the last post she made after you initially responded. After deleting her posts, your post and that of Soror AKA2D and others that were directed at her were out of place. So, I deleted them simply for purposes of clarity.
By the way, DG, if you would like more info. feel free to e-mail me.
