selectivity
i'll be rushing a local sorority on my campus next week. although i've never been through rush, i know the national sororities here on my campus tend to be pretty selective. how selective do local sororities tend to be?

Like national sororities, it depends on a lot of factors. The best way to figure it out is to ask around - ask the Greek Advisor if there is one, ask other people at school, ask your RA...what state are you or what school do you go to? If you don't feel comfortable sharing, that's fine, but that might help us give you better advice.

i'd rather not say where I go to school, but we're located in the midwest. I guess I'm just a little anxious about going through rush, and I thought it would be nice to get some advice or reassurance. How can I show that I'm interested and worthy of being in the sorority? What questions should I ask during recruitment? I've been lurking around the locals forum for awhile, and you all seem like great people, so I thought this would be a good place to get some advice. thanks!

Try looking through the rush forum...you will find lots of good advice there.

I can't speak for all locals, but my local doesn't care about specific numbers. If we think you're a good fit and can bring in some new and interesting ideas, we'll give you a bid. Because of how flexible we are, we have a wonderfully diverse and open sisterhood.
I'd say don't worry too much about it. If it's meant to be, everything will fall into place. Go to all the organizations you're interested in and ask about what their sorority is like, what they stand for, etc. They'll love any question you have.

My sorority isn't exactly a local, but we sort of operate like one since very few Beta Sigma Phi chapters are on college campuses (we are at UMass) and we don't do Rush with the Panhellenic chapters.
When we Rush, we look for enthusiasm and general friendliness. We want girls who are willing to devote their time and talents to our chapter. We want girls who are looking to form sincere friendships within the chapter. We are a small group, so if even one girl isn't participating, we miss her and her potential contributions. We are interested in girls who are serious about campus involvement and leadership.
When you go through Rush, you might want to ask about the chapter's community service activities. Ask what drew them to their chapter. Ask about the benefits of being local. You can always ask what the sisters enjoy most about the organization, or talk about any recent social events.
Good luck! I can't wait to hear how things turn out.

thanks for the great advice everyone. it may have been a better idea for me to go to the rush forum for this question, but i didn't want to start a rush thread like other girls have started. well, recruitment starts tonight, and i'm so excited that i can't help but be enthusiastic. thanks again.

Have a blast! From my experience, as I'm sure many others on here can testify, local sorority rush is MUCH different than NPC rush. I loved and made friends in both! When I rushed (last week) we had a meet and greet night, went bowling the next day, and had a picnic the 3rd day. Then we had Bid Night, and I'm not going to tell you what happened there, except that it was sweet and then we went to dinner. Of course, we took TONS of pictures!I hope you enjoy it and will share your rush experience with us!

thank you everyone for all the wonderful advice. you are all so kind. i actually go to a small school in Iowa, and the greek life here is pretty week. i went to the first event, and it just didn't feel right, so i'm not going to continue on with it. life will go on though, right? thanks again.

I'm sorry to hear that, but I know that you will find a place on your campus to be involved and have the time of your life, even if it isn't being Greek! There is so much out there. Good luck in all you do and stick around GC! Some of the nicest people I've ever "met" are on here!
