Recruitment at UNCG!
All right! Tonight was the first round of events at UNCG, and they went really well, I thought. We've got a really young chapter at UNCG (at least 2/3 of the chapter is my pledge class from last fall) and we were pretty nervous going in, but it felt really awesome at the end!
I talked to some absolutely darling girls, too. We had great conversations about all kinds of things (from sprained ankles to big sisters to pep band), and they were fresh-faced, energetic, and really seemed to get into the conversation.
There were maybe four or five girls who I really connected with. One of them is a KD legacy (we don't have them on our campus), and everyone in my group loved her. She walked in and said, "Wow, everyone in my Gamma Rho Chi group couldn't wait to come to Phi Mu! We were so excited because it's so PINK! Pink, pink, pink, pink, pink!" She was really cute.
The first girl I picked up at the very first event was great, too. She seemed really excited to be there, and had a lot of good questions.
At the second-to-last party, I picked up two girls who were my two favorites! The conversation between all three of us flowed very well, with no one person dominating the conversation. We were all involved in music (one girl is a music major, which is exciting...I didn't think any were going through!) and we're all from the mid-atlantic region. We didn't get much longer to talk because we bumped, but they seemed just as excited by the similarities as I was.
I am very excited....I'm maybe a little worried still, since we're so inexperienced as a chapter, and since all of the other chapters on campus are really strong. But so far we've had great alumnae support, and our advisor is amazing.

All right....tonight was our philanthropy night. It went really, really well. We had a luau theme. All the sisters wore khaki skirts and capris with brown sandals and a white t-shirt. The shirt had a bright pink box in the middle of the shirt, with the greek letters "Phi Mu" in white in the middle of that. We also had fluffy pink lei's to wear. As each girl came in, we gave her one to wear (just for the duration of the event, though!). We made leis for the kids at Duke Hospital, also.
A Miracle child came and spoke to the girls. She's a senior here at UNCG, and is in charge of Dance Marathon this year. She's really great, and made a great impact on all the girls from what I could see.
I talked to some of the girls I picked up last night (our rotation worked out kind of weird tonight) but one of them is my rush crush! She's soooooo amazing; really enthusiastic and great to talk to, but very genuine. I almost had a heart attack when, after the events were over, we heard she was going to pref tonight (the girl had a family emergency and couldn't come back tomorrow or Saturday, which is Pref). No early prefs came to Phi Mu, which made me cry because I really, really like this girl.
Amazingly...our advisor went to double-check the names, and the girl wasn't who I thought she was! The girl I liked had the same first name, last initial, and last syllable as the girl who preffed early, but they're different girls. My heart resumed its normal place in my chest, rather than at my feet where it had sunk.
So yeah, we ended on a really great note, and the girl I loved hasn't dropped us (yet, at least! Here's keeping my fingers crossed), and all the events went well, and everyone really really liked the leis they wore, and the speaker, and the craft, and...yeah. I can't wait for skit night tomorrow, y'all!

All right. Today is Bid Day. We've had an awesome past two days as a chapter and in recruitment events.
Skit night was incredible--we nailed it three times, our advisor said. The girls laughed, cried, and really seemed to enjoy themselves. I discovered, however, that we had made a mistake. The girls with the similar names had gotten mixed up, and my rush crush had, in fact, gone to early pref. How'd I find out? At the very first party, I picked up the other girl at the door. I was pretty darned surprised, but we had a great conversation, and she came back to our pref. All in all, a great night.
Last night was Pref night. The girls who came back to us were quality, each and every one of them. One girl, whom everyone really really loves, is a Phi Mu legacy! We're super excited about her, and she was really touched during the ceremony.
I ended up preffing both events. I was nervous, because I've never done it before and I was worried I wouldn't be able to fill the time.
Both events, our president ended up cutting me off. I found myself really drawn to both girls. The more I looked into their eyes as I poured out what Phi Mu had done for me, I realized more and more what incredible contribution they would have for our chapter, and how much I wanted to call each my sister.
As each girl goes to make her wish, I sang Reba McIntyre's "I'll Be." The chapter joins in on the chorus, and then, at the end, I sing the final "I'll be" as a solo. In both pref events, I sang that right to my girl, hoping she'd feel it as much as I did. At the first party, I knelt down and held her hands as I sang it (she's my new rush crush, I gotta say!). There wasn't a dry eye in the room, including my own (not so good for beautiful singing, let me tell you!). At the second, the girl had beautiful long blonde hair, which I smoothed over as I sang. She looked up at me and smiled.
Let me just tell you, pref was an amazing experience, and I am so glad that I got to do it twice last night.
As the girls left, we sang "Phi Mu Castle." At the door, as it closes, we usually just finish up the verse so they can hear us as they walk away. Last night, we couldn't stop singing. We pushed up against the door and hugged each other, one big group hug that included the entire chapter. I cannot say enough how incredible and bonding an experience it was to be a Phi Mu last night.
So now I'm finishing up my poster for my carnation sister, who is a Gamma Rho Chi. She's coming back to us today. I really think that we're going to get 20 beautiful, enthusiastic, wonderful new ladies.
I'll let everybody know when we get back.
Lion hugs and kisses,
Jenn

The three most wonderful things happened at Bid Day today....
1. GAMMA CHI GOT QUOTA WITH 20 NEW GIRLS!!!! I'm really excited, because so many of them came back to us from Pref night. They're an incredible group of girls who will bring a lot to the chapter.
2. BOTH MY GIRLS CAME HOME TO PHI MU!!!!! I saw the first running to us, and threw a shirt over her head and hugged her like crazy. I was so happy, I was shaking. Then I turned around and saw the other girl with our bid day shirt on. I ran over and hugged her, too. Then, I was so happy, I cried.
And, last but not least....
3. MY BIG SISTER CAME HOME AGAIN!!!! She did an amazing job as a Gamma Rho Chi. And you know what? Even though they had her pegged as belonging to a different chapter, 7 out of 13 in her group went Phi Mu. How cool is that? (Both my girls, incidentally, were in her group).
We had a great Mardi Gras-themed celebration, and then the ribboning ceremony. My big and I stood side by side again to sing "Picture a Girl" and the benediction. Let me tell you, all the hard work and frustration in getting here has been repaid a thousandfold. I am SO fortunate to belong to Phi Mu! And now I'm getting excited about getting a little this year!
