Wink Taking Chances!!!!!!!

Gosh!!! I thought that since we all know what we regret, what about the other side of the coin? What in life did you take a chance on and it totally paid off?

For me it was continuing school after becoming pregnant with my son. I went all the way home to Cali sad and hurt, took a year and a half off, saved my money and moved back (baby in tow) to Louisiana to finish school despite EVERYONE telling me taking care of a baby and being in school would be impossible without family. Well I am doing Wonderful, graduating with honors In December, serving all mankind and living a great life. I sometimes wonder what I would be doing if I would have just stayed at home and gave up.

Wonderful, I have had the "pleasure" to experience the exact same situation. And now, at 23 I am getting married, finishing school, have my OWN house, and a job that is going to further my career and goals!

It is funny, I never thought that I would be in this situation. But when I was faced with it, I took all responsibility and showed my true independence and has blossomed into the woman I am today.
Thank goodness, I left Cali, because I would of used my family as a cusion and probably would not be motivated to be successful, just comfortable. Besides there ain't nothing going on out there! I look back at all of my so-called friends who have graduated, and well, they aren't doing nearly as well as I. I don't mean to brag, but these are the same ones that came down so hard on me when my situation evolved, and they just new my hopes and dreams was over.

My mother gave me some good advise:
Don't let ANYTHING (or person) stand in my way, and all things will come in time.

Well, I took a chance and went against the "family" grain and attended the university that I did. Otherwise, I wouldn't have met my husband. Generally speaking, I think my life path would've been different. It definately made a difference.

Also, I am glad that I went to law school, even though I received absolutely no support in my decision. I think half of my family wanted me to be a teacher, and the other half thought I just wasn't capable (even though I had made the Dean's list 6 straight semesters and had a scholarship) Well to make a long story short, I got into each of the law schools I applied to, and managed to keep my academic scholarship for the three years that it took to complete the program. Although I haven't taken the bar yet I am gad that I had the opportunity; otherwise I wouldn't have been able to study law in Africa, and see all the countries that been blessed to see.

I guess it's sad, but true that sometimes it's your family that keeps you from following your dreams.

Red face

It's amazing, but I've always lived life on the safe side... Or at least that is what I think I did... So, taking chances with my life seems as though that was the way my life is supposed to be... But that's just me.

Wink

After graduating from college, I moved from New York City to the Carribean to be with the love of my life. I was "lectured" by my family and everyone else and their mother about how "unlady-like" it was to "chase" after a man and that I was "raised better than that". Dang! It's not like I wasn't invited.

Anyway, I was kinda worried that things wouldn't work out. I even opened a special savings account once I got here to be used in case I had to flee, I mean, leave in a rush. (My grandmother's advice) I'm happy to say that it's six years later and we're doing great. We're going house "shopping" next week!

Wow! How reflective for me see this thread from last year I started, it made me grateful and proud to see how my "chances" have paid off.
Update: I did graduate with honors from Southern (go jags!)in December and am currently teaching 7th and 8th grade. I am finally engaged after 7 years with the same guy and serving mankind in the local grad chapter, in fact my undergrad chapter honored me as "Neophyte of the Year" for 2000-2001.
More Chances: In keeping with taking chances we are relocating to Houston in August from La. I have no family there, (well I have sorors), and we are just going! I am in grad school here at Southern but plan to pick up my program in Houston, so if there are any soros in the Houston area please email your soror with any helpful info on chapters or Houston in general I have tons of questions.
