Is it tacky to take out an ad in the school newspaper
I mean a classified ad, the full and half page ads are way too expensive for my chapter.

One of the fraternities took out an ad advertising their rush events and it was in the paper for a couple of days. When my sisters and I saw the ad, the first thing that came to our minds was that they must have a lot of money because it's expensive to run an ad for the amount of time they did-- it never occurred to me that it was tacky.

Our chapter took an ad out in school paper. It won't appear till school starts. For us, taking out an ad is one of the only ways we can get out name out there.
I don't think taking out an ad is tacky at all.

I think it would be an excellent idea. When I was still in HS and visited my guy at his college I was always impressed with the newspaper advertising the greeks did there. I would consider too putting a congrats ad in after initiation perhaps too. Shows you just aren't looking for new members bu aret happy for & support your new members too. I seem to remember AXO did a congrats for our new members ad...
Many times in the same paper in the classified section there were ads to different events organizations, greek and non-greek, were having and they were done in a cute way. For example, "Hey Kelly, did you hear that Panhel is sponsoring a picnic at the falls Saturday at noon for free?! See you there, Suzie" I think you could definetly make the ad look classy and hopefully get results too.

On our campus, ads are a huge thing everyone figures in for their PR budget. Ads are run congratulating new members, initiates, new officers (and thanking the old ones), pinnings and engagements, good luck on finals, congrats on big achievements (Rho Chi's, Pan, or IFC officers...). They are also used by both sororities and fraternities to announce who won and placed in philanthropies, to announce date dashes, welcoming parents on parents weekends, and on and on. I think that you all get the idea. I'm really suprised to hear that other campuses don't use this PR tool more openly.

I totally know what you mean. My school even has it's entire own Greek newspaper specifically FOR this purpose ( www.greekchronicle.com) I guess on my campus it's not looked at as a huge deal since we have this paper, no one would think of it as tacky either.

My school does this as well. Not for all the events you mentioned but they advertise for rush, new "pledges" and then new members. I think it's very positive and is nice to read where a friend in a class went

Not tacky at all - Alpha Phi at SFSU does it all the time, hon It's hard enough at that school to advertise rush and gain support, so do whatever it takes! I hope you guys do well next semester...I know the sigma class is already anxious for new pledges, I hope I get to meet some if I can make it to Presents

Our groups take out ads all the time--in the freshman facebook, in the newspapers several times per year (usually to honor their pledges, homecoming nominees, etc), or for school events (we have a huge school-wide ball with a program. It's not viewed as tacky but rather a way of participating in the campus and spreading good PR.

My school uses banners hanging outside the student union to announce events and newpaper ads to welcome new members. Whether or not it's tacky depends on your school.

Yeah, the one sorority that does it on our school doesn't seem to be having any success.

Newspaper ads arent real big on my campus, but ads on the tv are. There are the campus closed circuit chanels that play ads between showing movies. So many of the fraternities and some of the sororities will put ads on there...they just look like power point slides, and it works pretty well since everyone who lives on campus watches movies on those chanels.
