Identity

What is your primary means of self-identification? Is it your race? nationality? religion? ethnicity? age? political ideology?

Good question...

I'm a 21 year old european lapsed catholic female, who leans to the conservative side... Good thing I don't identify with any of this.

I'm Arya, people call me Arya.

Socially, I'm a liberal. Economically, I'm a liberal (classical liberal). I disagree with farm subsidies, steel subsidies, tariffs, etc. ok, i guess i'm a neo-liberal. Free trade baby.

This is really a hard one...sometimes, I feel like I don't HAVE an identity. I'm somebody's Mom, Mrs. Justamom, her sister THEIR daughter-in-law... I used to be ME! (Tom you should see this and understand)

When I was ME, I identified myself as a free spirit, gentle soul who loved Shakespeare and music.
That part may never fully reemerge, but something inside of me is stirring-I have an anxious feeling almost all of the time and I am looking for an outlet.
I AM A CREATIVE PERSON IN SEARCH OF A PROJECT!

I'm a 22 year old Canadian female with a variety of ethnic backgrounds (and I put all of them on my census form). I do not believe in organized religion (although I was christened in the United Church of Canada). My political views I would say are liberal. I don't identify or label myself with just one thing. I am more than the sum of my parts.

i am a 21 year old. my skin is black (well...light brown) but my color doesnt define who i am. i have always been the liberal one in the land of conservatism. i want to continue in my christian life that i grew up in, but it is hard cause i am curious about so many things that would be frowned upon in the christian world. i have an outspkoen personality but a quiet voice. lately, people have known me as the one who is going to die from stress cause i take everything so seriously. i just one to be the one who always going to work HARD for what she wants. i have never been able to fit into the stereotypical life mold of the ethinic groups. that is okay. i am me.

sexual orientation, race, gender. those three will never change, even if my religion, age, and politics do change.

I think my identity is based on a lot of those factors, and even more so by the seeming contradictions between some of those factors.

Socially-liberal, almost to the point of being a leftist Libertarian.
Politically-left of center, but understands a balance of power is the healthiest solution.
Economically-concerned w/ keeping the nation out of exorbitant debt. I guess this would make me fiscally conservative.
Major environmentalist.
Major feminist who loves it when men hold the doors open for me, change my tires, and carry my bags in the airport.
Believes that a nuclear family headed by a mother and a father is best, but is tolerant of single parents and gay-parented families.
Religiously-atheist.
Ethnically-African-American. My religious outlook coupled with ethnic background tend to confuse a lot of people.

But...to look at me, I dress very conservatively (ie, Charlotte from SATC). When you consider my sorority membership and the fact that I'm from the South and was raised w/ all the ideas of proper upper-middle class Southern deportment, it's very easy to paint me as a Miss Priss. Which isn't true at all...

One part of my identity, however, is NOT being my boyfriend's girlfriend. Let's just clear that one up right now...

So, it's hard for me to use those things as my identity. I end up surprising a lot of people after they get to know me. The boy always says labels are for canned food, the mama says not to forget labels are also good for medication.

i'm megan first of all. then, at school at parties i'm a phi mu. at work i'm a college student at home for summer. i'm a roman catholic. i'm a 20 year old junior. i'm a sister a daughter a niece a cousin a grandaughter and a friend. i'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal. i'm a peacemaker. i'm also a confidant. i'm a woman who wants nothing more than to teach history, marry, and raise a family (in that order). i'm just simply me.

Good question ...
Most of the time I have no identity other than my name ... but I guess I can be Jess's girlfriend or that Sigma Kappa in class ... or I dunno ... whatever people see or think when they look at me ...

To me ... I guess I dont really have an idenity ... Im whatever everyone else wants me to be.

For eight hours of the day, I'm identified by my job: Psych researcher who is good with computers and patients. Back at BC, I'm a Kappa Delta or Carter's girl. When I'm with my family, I'm the problem child. When I'm with my KD sisters, I truly feel like I'm just Kristi

i was a journalist for the longest period of time. if you are good at what you do, the rest of it shouldn't show -- and i liked it. but when i visit the parents, i am just the daughter. along the way, i became a bit liberal, but remain a lover of musical theater. now i'm a high school teacher.

I am me... I don't like to be labeled by what I do/look like... I maybe a college student, a phi sig, a dancer, a singer, slightly liberal, daughter, friend, cousin, etc... but I wouldn't want any of these things to be my sole identity... these things are only a part of my identity they combine to form me... so I am just ME and I love when I can be just that and not be living up to the standard/expectations that some of my activities or whatever put on me.
